There’s Something About Pittsburgh, Apparently

What is it about the Pittsburgh Penguins that encourages their players to flagrantly attempt to injure others? In hockey, elbows fly. Sticks jab. Shoulders crush. It’s a brutal game we love, and that’s as it should be. But no one should so blatantly intend to injure their opponents—for while all may be fair in love and war, anyone elevating professional sports to that level is deluded.

The Guys Who Keep the Capitals Laughing

There’s a delicate balance in sports between remaining alert and on top of your game, yet staying loose – or, as they put it in hockey, not gripping the stick too tight. One member of the 1989 Stanley Cup-winning Calgary Flames turned on the movie Slap Shot before a crucial Game 7 and got the whole team laughing, chronicles Ross Bernstein in Raising Stanley. The 1993 Cup-winning Montreal Canadiens used their coach’s imperfect English as an endearing joke that kept the team light-hearted.

Another Rematch with Another Old Rival

For the second time in three years the Washington Capitals open the NHL postseason against the New York Rangers, an old Patrick division rival. Of the first five playoff series Alexander Ovechkin and the rebuilt Caps since first qualifying for the postseason together in 2008, four have come against old Patrick foes.

Correspondingly, those bitter rivalries have been freshly renewed by the showdowns. That’s how hockey hatred is developed. In the sorta old days, you first had to best your Patrick foes in divisional play before advancing toward Eastern conference supremacy. There is a bit of that feeling to all these Patrick division springtime reunions, albeit spread out over a couple of seasons.

New Role Fits Brooks Laich’s Style

There’s a general perception among Washington writers that forward Brooks Laich is one of the team leaders on the Capitals roster. So his new on-ice responsibility seems a natural fit: helping orchestrate the power play from the blue line.

“I don’t know – we’d been struggling, just not getting a lot of chances,” Laich said of how he wound up on the point. After a recent injury to defenseman Dennis Wideman, Laich said, “Bruce asked me if I’d like to go back there, and I said I’d give it a shot.”

Snapshots: High Winds With Some Sunny Skies in Washington

Last night’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes was summed up best by Matt Hendricks when he described it as one that got away. The team had ample opportunity to capitalize on some key chances but were never able to finish. It was that inability to see a play all the way through that ended up costing the Caps a win.

Washington’s Biggest Mistake

Capitals General Manager George McPhee has made some absolutely gorgeous decision this season. Whether it be the trade for Scott Hannan, picking up Marco Sturm off waivers or acquiring what appears to be the team’s new locker room leader, Jason Arnott, for almost nothing, GMGM should be in the running for GM of the year. To bad his most recent decision, to send Braden Holtby back to Hershey, is his worst of the year and one that could really hurt the Caps in just a few weeks.
