Nylander to Russia, Pending Final Approval

Per TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Washington Capitals center Michael Nylander is headed to Russia

On Injury Confidentiality and Its Collision with a New and Rabid Fanbase

Has there ever been a week of hour-to-hour hyperventilating over the health status of a hockey player in D.C. the likes of which we’ve seen with Alexander Ovechkin here the past week? I think not. This is unchartered territory for Washington’s hockey fans. The Russian Machine at long last has broken down. He seemed indestructable. Now we [...]

Farewell to a Fan Among Fans

That Mr. Jenkins secretly took skating lessons to surprise his son is truly heartwarming. Here was a man whose passion for both the sport and his family led him to strap on skates for the first time, probably with wobbling legs like a newborn fawn (I know that’s what it was like for me). It’s one thing to start skating as a child, when one’s bones are rubbery and one’s sense of invulnerability is intact. It’s quite another thing to hit the ice when hitting the ice is likely going to hurt like hell.

We at OFB wish Mr. Jenkins’ family well, and mourn the passing of someone who shared our passion for rocking the red.

The Stand-in Savior?

This is every Capitals’ fan worst nightmare: Ovi out with an injury. The good news: his time on the sideline doesn’t appear likely to be protracted — a forecast of two weeks arrived from head coach Bruce Boudreau on Tuesday. Still, beginning tonight in New Jersey, the Caps face something they’ve only had to on four [...]

Mike Green Podcast Via Versus

Comcast partnered with Versus to produce a podcast with Mike Green that we participated in last week, along with two other new media outlets (thehockeywriters.com and The Hockey Barn.com). We received the imbed code for the full podcast late yesterday, so now we can share the full program with you. A producer with Comcast told us that “working with VERSUS and having them get involved in new media and with sites like yours is a great thing, something we are excited about. I really appreciate your participation in the podcast; people like you really helped to make this a success. It was one of our first attempts using Blogtalkradio, and I think with the success of this, and the involvement with great sites like yours could lead to future events like this.”

Update on the Gr8: 'Week to Week'

Turns out we didn’t have to wait until Tuesday morning to find out more about Alexander Ovechkin’s injury; the Caps this afternoon sent out an update that sounds more ominous than the report we had when we left the rink last night: he’s out “week to week” with an “upper body strain.” “We have to buckle down,” Bruce [...]

For Mike Knuble, a Jekyll and Hyde Sunday Night

From my vantage there were two lead storylines from Sunday’s 5-4 defeat by Columbus. Storyline 1A trumps storyline 1B by a wide margin: How badly is he hurt? “Day to day” is the official company line, as is the proverbial “upper body injury”; no update on his health will be offered before Tuesday morning’s skate. The all-world left wing may well have suffered his injury in a scrum in front of the Blue Jacket bench in the second period, one precipitated by Jason Chimera as retribution for his being (cleanly, very)planted in about the third row of the seats by freight train Ovi.
