While we enjoy our summer cookouts and fun in the sun, Alexander Ovechkin is hard at work training for the 2007-08 NHL season.

Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport recently spoke with Ovechkin during his hockey training regimen. Below is a translation of the article “Washington Forward Alex Ovechkin: We Live Here Like It’s a Pioneer Camp!” for your reading pleasure.

Alexander Ovechkin returned to St. Petersburg from Saransk, where he took part in the national Shumbrat, Finno-Ugria festival. Alex arrived back at the gym fresh and upbeat, even though he was coming straight from the airport.

Alex, what took you to Saransk?

I was invited to go there. My mom also came, as did Alexei Nemov [Olympic gymnastics champion]. We loved it! I gave a “master class” to kids, showed them a few hockey tricks. Two teams battled for a prize — my hockey stick. A new arena was built there; hockey in the republic [of Mordovia] is on the rise.

Do you follow the news from the NHL? Your friend Dainius Zubrus signed a contract with New Jersey not long ago.

Yes, I spoke with Zubie three days ago. It’s a shame that he was traded from Washington. But at the end of the day, Dainius got what he wanted. I am very happy for him.

What do you think about Yashin returning to the Superleague?

I don’t know all the details, although Yashin probably won’t lose anything in this situation. I think NHL clubs will still be interested in him. Alexei himself can play in Russia at [Alexei] Morozov’s level. Remember how great he played in the Superleague during the lockout.

This is the last year of your contract with Washington. Do you realize that you have to have an exceptional season to raise your earnings?

If I think only about money, nothing good will come of it . . . But I changed my preseason training schedule. I started [training] in the beginning of July, just like other guys from the Superleague. That’s about a month earlier than last season. My training [last year] did not go well. I went to Canada to train with my personal fitness trainer. The training load was OK but not “physical”, just weight lifting for various parts of the body. Most of the time not [focused on the body parts] that a hockey player needs. That’s why during last season sometimes I felt like I didn’t have enough strength.

But here in St Petersburg it is great! We all train together, help each other. We are hanging out like it’s a pioneers camp [like Boy Scouts]. Dmitry [their trainer] the coach is our team leader. Sergey Gonchar kept saying how well he trained here before the start of last season. He suggested I come here too. And I don’t regret it!

I was told that in the beginning Gonchar could hardly handle the new training system . . .

And I didn’t even finish my cross-country run the first time! My pulse was 210, but now it is 176. The progress is evident.

Do you run listening to music?

Yes, everybody has a player. I play Eminem. Because of it running is especially rhythmic.

Why did you decide to stay at the trainer’s house in St Petersburg?

There are always parties at his house. There are always a lot of beautiful girls, a dance floor. And in the bedroom there is a huge disco ball and a pole to all the way to the ceiling… [Ovechkin says it with a straight face, but then can’t hold it any longer and bursts out laughing.]

Our Canadian colleagues [from CBC traveling with Sovetsky Sport] were amazed: if Sydney Crosby went to an ordinary city gym in the States he would be torn apart for souvenirs. You just come here and train with regular people.

That doesn’t bother me. Yes, I do see that people recognize me. But this is the difference in Russia that no one throws themselves at me and don’t disturb my personal space.

Crosby has already signed his extension with Pittsburgh. How are your negotiations with Washington going?

I don’t want to talk about it. The fact that Crosby signed his new contract and I have not doesn’t make my pulse rush.

Herewith, our attempt to devise a depth chart for the Caps to coincide with the recent completion of the team’s annual Rookie Development Camp. It’s important to note that with it we are not forecasting specific line combos but rather attempting to slot players by position according to their professional production and most recent performances in evaluative settings. It’s also important to note that a number of forwards in the Caps’ system play more than one position up front. The Russian elites and Matt Pettinger appear locks on the left side for well into the next decade, whereas the right side seems to carry many more question marks.

We’ve envisioned this as a file hopefully sparking spirited reaction and respectful challenge. We welcome your proposed modifications.

Our good friend Dmitry Chesnokov of Sovetsky Sport (your Russian needs to be pretty polished to read it) was able to reach Alexander Ovechkin by telephone today and get his reaction to Sidney Crosby’s new contract with the Penguins. Here’s what he told Dmitry:

“What can I say? Good for Crosby! It is easier for any player to come out and play when he knows that his future is secure. I think Pittsburgh wasted no time offering Crosby the deal because of what Edmonton did trying to sign a restricted free agent. Any Canadian team (and not only Canadian) could have offered great terms to Crosby in the future. And who knows if the Penguins could have matched it. But now Sindey is staying in Pittsburgh, and will stay there beyond 2013, in my opinion.”

When asked about his contract, Ovechkin said:

“I will negotiate with the Capitals myself. To be precise, I will wait for their offer. If I like it, I will sign the contract. If I don’t, then I will get myself an agent (I don’t have one right now) to represent me in talks with the Capitals.”

The Capitals did as promised: they were major players in the free agent market this offseason. And it’s no sure thing that they’re done dealing, as pursuit of RFAs via trades has been a stated goal of the team for months.

I’m not saying that Michael Nylander, Viktor Kozlov and Tom Poti were the absolute best hockey players up for grabs; but the signings represent smart moves that directly address the team’s needs without mortgaging the future. Most importantly, the moves improve the team immediately while keeping enough funds handy to lock in Ovechkin and Semin — I’d rather see the team ante up for those two over any of the big-name forwards in this year’s UFA crop. The Los Angeles Kings took a similar approach to the Capitals’, signing pivot Michal Handzus (four years, $16M), wingers Ladislav Nagy (one year, $3.75M ) and Kyle Calder (two years, $5.5M) and D Tom Preissing (four years, $11M). Another relatively responsible restocking in this offseason of big spending.

How did the other 28 teams fare? Well, let’s review a few of the notables. Rather than a typical grading system, I’ll attempt a Hollywood Starlet system instead: Scarlett Johansson, Lindsay Lohan, or Nicole Richie.

Undeniably attractive, smart, and sexy. And Scarlett ain’t bad either. Some teams made just the right moves, not only in their choice of players but also with the deals they offered. Rather than spending like Donald Trump’s ex-wives, certain teams found the right player(s) for the right price.

Avalanche fans will be thrilled with Ryan Smyth’s arrival in Colorado. By bringing in Smyth (5 years, $31M) and Scott Hannan (4 years, $18M), the Avs get two rough-and-tumble players whose styles fit the team perfectly. 31-year-old Smyth’s five-year deal is not only a fairly affordable cap hit, but a reasonable duration as compared to some other signings.

The Detroit Red Wings continued their less-is-more approach by signing just one notable player in the first two days of UFA-Fest: Brian Rafalski. After losing 38-year-old Mathieu Schneider to Ducks, the Wings managed to upgrade while not losing a dime by signing 33-year-old Rafalski. His $6M per year for five years is about what the Ducks are paying Schneider per year; yet Rafalski is five years younger. In addition, Rafalski notched 55 points last season (30 on the PP) while playing the Devils’ ultra-conservative system. One would think he’ll perform even better in the Motor City’s more exciting style of play. Once again, Detroit’s management manages to make the right moves without breaking the bank; it’s no wonder they’re perennial contenders.

Lindsay Lohan

Some teams went on benders to rival Ms. Lohan’s. The New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers signed big name players to obscene contracts — making sexy but crazy moves. Like Tyrone Biggums with crack cocaine, neither team could resist the allure of spending with abandon. Clearly both teams’ rosters are dramatically improved for next season; but this sort of freewheeling spending backfires more often than not. They both are trying to buy championships; and in hockey, that rarely works.

Philadelphia began their binge early, throwing crazy pre-July 1 deals at Kimmo Timmonen and Scott Hartnall — both appealing but now-overpaid players — whose contracts are crazy not so much in terms of annual salary as they are in terms of duration. Then the Flyers topped themselves by giving spear-to-the-groin Daniel Briere an eight year deal. Each of these players is undeniably talented; but the dollars and duration of these contracts makes one wonder if Bobby Clarke is still in Philadelphia, working the levers as the man behind the curtain.

Mind you, the Rangers’ attempt to make the New York Yankees seem like cheapskates is just as stunning. Snagging both Chris Drury and Scott Gomez is quite a feat to be sure. But $7M per year to Drury, combined with a $51.5M seven-year deal to Scott Gomez (who has exceeded 20 goals just once in seven years of play), is insanity.

Including Jaromir Jagr, they now have spent over a third of their salary cap on three players, and they have not signed Brendan Shannahan, Sean Avery, or Henrik Lundqvist yet. Yikes. One wonders how long it will take Jagr to complain about the loss of Nylander if his adjustment to Gomez/Drury is less than perfect. In fact, it sounds like he’s already laying the groundwork for future complaining.

Nicole Richie

So far, the other 2/3 of New York was brutally pillaged by free agency’s raiders. Like Nicole Richie, the Sabres and Islanders are skeletal remnants who practically qualify for Federal disaster assistance.

The Sabres lost both their co-captains and seem to have returned to their spendthrift ways. After their season of excellence was eclipsed by the Ottawa Senators, Sabres management let both captains walk away with apparently minimal effort to stop them. With intense league-wide interest in both Drury and Briere, nobody expected the Sabres to retain both players. But losing both is a crushing blow to the team, not just in terms of skill but of leadership as well. Management’s half-hearted contract offers, particularly to local hero Drury, indicate a “well, we tried” attitude settling in with Buffalo’s brass. Here’s one Sabres fan writing for ESPN who certainly feels that way

As for the Islanders, they lost Kozlov, Poti, Ryan Smyth — who turned out to be a rather expensive rental, costing two former first-round picks plus this year’s first rounder — captain Jason Smith, and Richard Zednik. They appear to be emulating the Florida Marlins, only without the championship (well, not in the past 20+ years). Next they’ll rename their arena to Nassau Mausoleum. Isles fans cannot be happy losing three of their top six scorers — and their sole UFA signing of Jon Sim is not the answer. Dark days are ahead on the Island.

And . . .

Other teams were relatively silent, most notably the Caps’ Southeast rivals. A View from the Cheap Seats looked at the Caps’ divisional foes, and is similarly unimpressed with their signings so far.

A few other moves of note: the Blues snagged Kariya and Tkachuk (a.k.a. “The St. Louis Boomerang”), the Leafs acquired Jason Blake from the decimated Islanders, and the Penguins wisely re-signed Ryan Whitney (but what’s with the Darryl Sydor signing? Shades of Philly’s Derian Hatcher mistake), and Chicago brought in Robert Lang. The Ducks overpaid Todd Bertuzzi to ensure they have someone to take stupid penalties if Pronger gets hurt. Nothing too exciting there, though the Blues are clearly looking to return to the playoffs with those veteran deals.

As for the Capitals, fans seem pretty happy about the teams’ acquisitions; some may even renounce their hockey grumpiness. The Hogs are similarly pleased, and Off Wing Opinion has some interesting quotes from the GMGM conference call.

All in all, it’s been a good couple days for Capitals bloggers and fans alike . . . with perhaps more good news on the horizon.

The Washington Capitals have proved good on their publicly-stated intentions of spending some money and bringing some veteran talent into the fold, signing right wing Viktor Kozlov, center Michael Nylander, and defenseman Tom Poti. The three represent an influx of offensive talent to a club that has grinders to spare, but had a definite need for high-level talent.

Nylander’s return to the Nation’s Capital immediately fills the 1st line center spot and should set Alex Ovechkin to licking his lips in anticipation of some of the feeds he’ll be getting in scoring areas. The 12-year vet is coming off a career-high season, and his tutelage should help promising youngster and fellow countryman Nick Backstrom adjust to the realities of the NHL. At 4 years, the term may a bit on the long side for a 34-year-old player, but the Caps have a legitimate 1st line center to work with their talented wingers named Alex, and that’s a big positive.

Poti’s skill in moving the puck and being able to work the power play should improve the special teams unit, though the big blueliner is not known for his defensive acumen or physical game. He eats minutes, though, and was Isles’ coach Ted Nolan’s go-to guy on the backline. His nearly 600 games in the NHL will hopefully provide some veteran leadership to a young defensive corps that has talent, but not much experience.

Kozlov can play center, but is more comfortable on either wing and should get plenty of minutes. The Russian is another big boy who may not use his size in an overly-aggressive manner, but possesses a wicked wrist-shot and plenty of puck skill. It’s assumed he will play on the right side for the Caps, though on which of the top two lines seems up in the air.

In the end, agree with the choices or not, the Caps did what they said they would do — add players assertively to the club to upgrade the talent. The sore-spot of the power-play, in particular, is looking much better on paper, with three skilled participants added.

There still seems to be a bit of a void as far as a solid, veteran defensive defenseman goes, but overall the Caps have delivered on what they promised: change.

Update: Tarik El-Bashir reports that Nylander will be paid $5.5 million for the first three seasons, and then less in the fourth season. Expensive, to be sure, but maybe not outrageous.

For more than 30 years now the Central Scouting Service has been providing scouting and evaluation services for draft-eligible hockey players to the National Hockey League. It employs nine full-time and six part-time scouts in North America and has association with a half dozen more in Europe. Its final list of rankings and prospect profiles is indispensable to all NHL clubs every spring. The league’s Entry Draft Media Guide is a handy handbook that tallies Central Scouting’s labor all year long and often provides illuminating biography of prospects beyond their on-ice stats. The Service interviews more than 200 North American prospects, and my favorite question asked of each is, “What three people would you most like to have dinner with?”

No surprise: Wayne Gretzky ran away with first place; 49 prospects selected him. Lance Armstrong (21) had a lot of support, as did Bobby Orr and Tiger Woods (19), Steve Yzerman (17), and Will Farrell (10).

I was disappointed that Vince Vaughan (4) nipped Herb Brooks (3). Slightly stunned that Jessica Simpson (5) bested Jessica Alba (2), Pamela Anderson (2), Maria Sharapova (2), Rachel McAdams (2), Keira Knightly (1), Kate Beckinsale (1), Halle Berry (1), Heidi Klum (1), Evangeline Lily (1), Eva Longoria (1), and Carrie Underwood (1). Comforted that Elvis (1) matched Barry Bonds (1).

George Bush (7) won among the pols, besting Al Gore (3), JFK (3), and Vladimir Putin (1).

Bobby Orr’s strong showing helped offset an otherwise dismal regard for old timers. Only three prospects wanted dinner with Grapes. Gordie Howe was a favored dinner companion for only two prospects, placing him in the same cocktail lounge with Jaromir Jagr (the indignity!), Vince Lombardi, Ray Bourque, Keifer Sutherland, and Chris Chelios.

The message was mixed with regard to mullets: Mario had 10 requests, but Sidney just three. No one wanted dinner with Barry Melrose.

Single requests ran the gamut of our cultural spectrum: Mike Tyson, David Beckham, Martin Luther King Jr. (depressing, that), Bono (gratifying, that), LeBron James, Paris Hilton, John McEnroe, Scotty Bowman (outrageous), and Carmen Electra.

God was wanted for dinner just once. At least He beat OJ.

National pride compels me to point out that three American prospects distinguished themselves for the caliber of their dinner companion choices. Teddy Ruth of the United States National Team Development Program requested George Washington, Alexander the Great (no, not AO), and Bobby Orr. I think that would have been a marvelous table at the Palm. Kevin Shattenkirk, also of the USNTDP, chose Achilles, Albert Einstein, and Michael Jordan. High achievers, those. And Jeremy Smith of Dearborn, Michigan, and the Plymouth Whalers sought Einstein, JFK, and his late grandfather.

Greetings from Russia! We’ve not yet seen much of Moscow beyond our hotel lobby/bar and the arenas, though we hope to remedy that tomorrow as Friday is the one day with no scheduled games. More ruminations on culture, food & drink are coming as soon as we can; the frenetic pace we’re keeping is dizzyingly intense, both at the games and post-game creation/editing of columns and photos into the wee hours. Last night I gratefully sank into a deep six and a half hours’ sleep—by far the most on the trip on any given night.

A Blogger’s Repast: Russian arena food. The pastry contains a small hot dog, basically a Russian pig-in-a-blanket. The beer was an unusual indulgence on this trip; we’ve generally been forgoing beer for vast quantities of espresso to maintain this pace.

Random observation: Someone working the PA system at Khodynka Arena really likes Aerosmith’s “Get A Grip”, we hear it several times per game. I have no idea why.

Alex Ovechkin anecdote: After yesterday’s Russian victory, which was appropriately enough on Victory Day (День Победы, Den’ Pobedy), there was the usual post-game media frenzy. Ovie was snagged by TV broadcasters (who get first dibs in a no-flash-photo area), then by the radio section, then finally by the print media.

As Ovie marched through the madness, graciously granting interviews to all comers, Mike Vogel shouted a hello to him. Ovie turned, saw Vogs and our crew, and his face lit up with an electric grin. “What’s up, beeyotches!” he exclaimed, and enthusiastically tapped fists with Vogel and Sean Parker before doing a quick Q&A. Hockey players are generally friendly and approachable, but Ovie is undoubtedly one of the best.

Okay, time to head into the Canada-Switzerland game—winner gets into the final four. До свидания! [Da svi`daniya]
