"Our goal isn't to win the first round; our goal is to win all the rounds."

Ever wonder how Bruce Boudreau is able to coach when the noise level at the Verizon Center is deafening? Gustafsson was able to ask that question and more during a conference call this afternoon. Here’s some highlights from the call with Gabby:

Reflections on a Special Night

Our favorite Russian correspondent Dmitry Chesnokov passed along to us a translation of a SovetskySport interview of Capitals’ Head Coach Bruce Boudreau and his new netminder, Simeon Varlamov, from Saturday. SovSport has a lot of guys in North American cities covering the NHL. One of them, Gennadi Boguslavski, met with coach Boudreau before the game [...]

Revisiting the Varlamov Interview

Per Tarik and Corey, Simeon Varlamov will make his NHL debut in Montreal on Hockey Night in Canada.  At least there won’t be any pressure on the rookie.
We thought it would be a good time to revisit Varlamov’s sit down with the media this past July.

"You with the pretzels, get in there."

The way injuries and recall travel logistics have been, this commercial from the 90’s seems rather appropriate.  Note the snazzy sweaters of the team in white.  No official word if the team in red had anyone with the last name Fedorov. Kozlov, Ovechkin, Semin, or Varlamov.

Thanks to Capitals Kremlin for reminding us of those classic [...]

Point, Varlamov

Varlamov notched the assist on Kyle Wilson’s game-winning goal . . . oh yeah, and he recorded a 30-save victory too, 5-2 over the Philadelphia Phantoms.

Promise in Net

Congratulations to Hershey Bears’ rookie netminder Simeon Varlamov, who tonight earned the first shutout of his North American professional hockey career. Varlamov turned aside all 19 shots he faced on the road in Albany as the Bears blanked the River Rats 3-0.
Valamov was named the game’s first star. Fellow rookie Mathieu Perreault earned two [...]

Simeon Varlamov Isn't Speaking So Softly These Days in Hershey

Back in July we got an introduction to Simeon Varlamov and an appreciation for the remarkable challenges he faces in the 2008-09 hockey season trying to get acclimated — linguistically and culturally — in this his first year of pro hockey in North America. It was then, in a Capitals’ office conference room, that he [...]

Saturday Night Blogging, Part II

Last Saturday I joined Eric McErlain and Jon Press¬†and Rebecca¬†from A View from the Cheap Seats¬†for a spirited Saturday night live blogging session from Verizon Center. Eric will host another live-blog this Saturday from the Phone Booth, for the Devils’ game. I’ll join in again but do so from Giant Center in Hershey, Pa., where [...]

Capitals' Varlamov on the NHL Experience

So as we watched Thursday night’s preseason game in the press box, our friend Dmitry Chesnokov said, “I’m going to call Varlamov [who was watching the game in street clothes], find out where he’s sitting and go talk to him.” Well that chat is now published in Sovetsky Sport this morning, and we are happy [...]

A Name No Longer Mentioned

One player’s name certainly is emerging from training camp’s first week — by virtue of its omission.
That of Olaf Kolzig.
You don’t hear it mentioned among the press, by fans in the Kettler stands, certainly not by Capitals’ players or coaches. Everybody seems to have moved on from the April agony and the summer transition trauma.
HockeyWashington, [...]
