Chicago’s Burgeoning Suburban Backyard Rink Boom

Friday’s Chicago Tribune highlighted our favorite passion-hobby sprouting conspicuously across the suburbs of that great city — families taking to skating outdoors, in this case by erecting rinks in their backyards.
“Years ago, backyard ice rinks seemed like a luxury for only the most die-hard hockey fans. But in recent years, it has become the winter [...]

Forgotten No Longer: The 1960 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team

Imagine setting out to document in film a historic sports achievement which by virtue of its time period offers only minimal archival footage. A great, great story to be told without much in the way of camera-eye evidence. Such was the dilemma-challenge confronted by Andrew Sherburne and Tommy Haines, makers of the celebrated 2007 documentary [...]

It Is Pond Hockey Weather

We brought you the Washington premiere of Pond Hockey in November of last year. Now, though SnagFilms, you can watch it online. It is well worth your time and will make you want to grab your skates and head outside.
Enjoy. And thanks SnagFilms!

A Forgotten Miracle Comes to Artistic Life

For hockey fans, it’s like a Christmas present received a month early: Andrew Sherburne and Tommy Haines, makers of the 2008 documentary ‘Pond Hockey,’ have reapplied their filmmaking skills and love of hockey to another puck project, ‘Forgotten Miracle.’ It tells the tale of the first true American Miracle on Ice — the 1960 U.S. Olympians [...]

It's Pond Hockey Time

ESPN’s Jim Caple recently listed the sporting events he would most like to see, one for each month in 2009. His entry for January started today:
JANUARY
U.S. Pond Hockey Championships, Minneapolis (Jan. 23 to Jan. 25)
The interesting thing about Minnesota is that in the 80-degree sunshine of summer you can go inside to watch baseball (and be sure to catch the Twins’ final season in the Metrodome this year), and during the depths of winter you can brave 30-below temps to watch hockey outside. The annual U.S. Pond Hockey Championships started in 2006 and have grown to include 248 teams competing for the coveted Golden Shovel (players are occasionally required to shovel snow from the 25 rinks). Past competitors include NHL vets Brian Bellows and Mike Crowley, as well as Gov. Tim Pawlenty. It’s amateur sports at its best — that is, plenty of beer, which we can only assume will be cold.

Black Friday Blues

It’s Black Friday.  You’ve thought about heading out to the mall looking for bargains on Christmas presents, but you don’t want to be another small fish in the sea of humanity, fighting for parking spaces, and standing in long lines.
OFB has your solution.  First head over to Zazzle to pick up some OFB loot:

Then head [...]

A Monday Night at the Movies Folks Won't Soon Forget

If nothing else I’ve learned this about our magnificent sport over the years: hockey enriches the lives of its players and fans, but the people in it actually have an uncanny ability to change lives. Mine got changed, again, on Monday night, in a small Northwest Washington movie theater filled with hockey lovers bearing witness [...]

Saturday Night Caps – Beauty Queen / Hollywood Edition

Joining Jonathan Warner on the weekly Saturday Night Caps last night was Eric McErlain and our very own pucksandbooks.  Calling into the show was Tara Wheeler, Miss Virginia / Hockey Goalie, and Andrew Sherburne, writer/producer/editor of Pond Hockey.  The common theme?  Skating outdoors.
Give it a listen here.  [ admin edit.  The copyright nazis have [...]

We're One Week Away from Painting This Town in Touques

One week from today the documentary ‘Pond Hockey’ arrives for a single-night screening at Washington’s historic Avalon Theater. Next Monday night we know we’re in for a great cinematic experience, one that richly captures outdoor hockey’s ageless and enduring appeal, but we have another aim for the evening: we want every puckhead patron seated in [...]

It's Hockey Movie Night Again During the Holidays in D.C.

Last year in the middle of the holidays we helped spread the word about a single-night screening of ‘The Rocket’ at the historic Avalon Theater in Northwest D.C. We’re doing the same thing this year — Washington is hosting another night at the movies to celebrate hockey.
On Monday night, November 17, at 8:00, puckheads will [...]
