On Little Punks and Their Cowardly Stickwork

The Flyers’ Danny Briere will next dress for a game this Sunday, in D.C., in the first game of the season between the Flyers and Caps. He will miss the Flyers’ next three games, as he’s been suspended by the NHL for his latest bit of stickwork on an opponent, in this instance Frans Neilsen [...]

Scrimmage Slideshow

Today’s rookie scrimmage was a highly-anticipated and hotly-contested affair. It was an excellent showcase of both the talents and necessary improvements of the young players.

The Summer of Fat Albert Brings Bad News for the Hockey Beat

At the very top of the hockey media hierarchy here there have been ominous departures this summer — Tarik El Bashir is pursuing new beats within the Post’s sports department, ones which won’t require anywhere near the travel commitments the hockey beat does, while Lisa Hillary is bolting to cover the Flyers for Comcast in [...]

Ted, Shall We Have a Wager on Next Spring?

The owner isn’t thrilled with me. Infrequently but once in a while we squabble, always respectfully. He and I share a passion for seeing greatness on the ice here; we just might go about its architecture in different ways. I’d like to see the Capitals annually look a heck of a lot more like the [...]

Storm Clouds Forming in the East

There’s a danger with playing it ultra conservative on Canada Day, the first day of unrestricted free agency: what if your power peers in the East don’t share that philosophy? And, what if they act like there’s no tomorrow with their wallets? What if, when it comes to free agency and bettering their rosters, they [...]

A Summer Wish List of Size and Snarl

The Flyers and Devils spent the weekend improving themselves. Gulp. The leadup to the NHL draft brings the greatest week of player movement on the calendar next to trade deadline comings and goings, and so this week we in Washington especially wonder: what does general manager George McPhee have up his sleeve? We know that neither [...]

A Pain Unlike Any Other

Two weeks ago, beginning merely hours after the Habs snuffed us out of the postseason, I noticed a precipitous drop-off in the traffic of colleagues about my office. An appropriate intuition and empathy enveloped them, affording me the imperative buffer I needed from the rest of humanity who follows common, mainstream sports. My colleagues just knew to treat me like a stranger on an elevator.

How It’s Gonna Shake Out in Round One

We asked our OFB Young Guns, Andrew and Alex, to piece together an overview of the first round of the NHL playoffs. It’s an overview not necessarily designed to wager on, but if you do, and if you win with these picks, remember us when next you see us at Clyde’s. Eastern Conference The Capitals [...]

Capitals First-Timers — Loving The Game

We here at OFB, and most of our readers, are long-time Capitals fans. We’ve been through the tough times; the dashed hopes; Juneau jubilation and Cup-finals disappointment; the Jagr-signing euphoria and the Jagr-reality let-down; the dreaded (but necessary) fire sale.

So it’s easy to forget what it was like when we first fell head over heels for hockey, and the Washington Capitals in particular.

Mrs. OrderedChaos’ coworker Megan had never been to a Capitals game. Her brother plays hockey in Upstate New York, but the family overall is pretty new to the sport. With her mother in town, she thought taking her mom (and herself) to a Caps game was a perfect activity for a visiting family member, god bless her.
