Goal or No Goal? When the Caps Are Involved, the NHL Has Offered Conflicting Answers

Here’s why a good many Caps’ fans are having difficulty squaring last night’s goal reversal against Alexander Ovechkin, which proved decisive in Montreal’s 6-5 overtime triumph: when it really mattered — in game 7 of the 2008 playoffs against the Flyers, and Cristobal Huet got bowled over and taken out of the play, leading to [...]

Winter Classic III: Hits and Misses

There’s a 108 percent chance of the Capitals participating in the 2011 Winter Classic, unless you believe that the NHL would like to see another dump-and-chase exhibition seriously limited in its offensive prowess competency. Through two periods Saturday the novice hockey viewer at home could have been forgiven for believing that teams were penalized for shooting [...]

Bloggers Bounce Questions off of Eddie O

The NHL yesterday hosted a bloggers-only conference call with NBC color guy Ed Olczyk, in conjunction with the league rolling out its on-site preparations at Fenway Park for the Winter Classic. We were fortunate enough to be invited to participate, and I’d swiftly sign up for the next call with Olczyk. He was sincere and engaging, thoughtfully [...]

Thanks to Dan Carcillo, My Kind of Saturday Night Massacre

Just when you thought Mike Duco had a lock on NHL Dummy of the Week, along skates Dan Carcillo, Neanderthal style, on Saturday night. As senseless and selfish acts go, it’s hard to fathom topping Carcillo’s dastardly deed against Matt Bradley, which precipitated the 8-2 Saturday Night Massacre in Philadelphia.
Duco on Thursday night earned 27 [...]

An Early Christmas Present for Caps’ Fans: December Agony in Philly

Quite near happy hour last night, a Friday happy hour, I learned that the Philadelphia Flyers, presently lodged in 10th place in the Eastern conference, fired their head coach, John Stevens. A popular preseason pick for the playing of hockey in June, the Flyers this December instead are in disarray. With this very happy happy [...]

First Fifth Review

The first fifth of the Capitals’ season leaves the club with a 10-3-4 record, 24 points, and a first-place tie for the the conference lead with the archrival Penguins. But is the Capitals position in the standings reflective of an authentic Cup-contending team? At the moment, Washington is the streakiest team in the league and [...]

A Rivalry Is Reborn (and Surprise, It's Not in the Southeast)

There was last night in our building, in abundance, hatred. Blissful, beautiful, bellicose, and long-lost loathing, united against the orange and black. The universe at last seemed ordered. An observer in the Phone Booth last night couldn’t help but imagine these two teams — so evenly matched last spring, last night, and likely for much of the next decade — engaging in scores more of these heart-stoppers of hatred, but with division pride at stake each time. And near the end of regular seasons, division titles on the line. Except that can’t happen.
What a (Bettman-birthed) tragedy.
