Bucci's Beautiful Backyard

We are all familiar with ESPN’s John Buccigras due to his hosting of the now defunct NHL2Night and his weekly columns on ESPN.com. Unless you saw Pond Hockey, you may not know he’s not only a reporter of the sport, but a participant, too — in his own backyard, noless.
His latest column and mailbag not only talks about the rebirth of the “Bucci Heritage Garden”, but gives us a few looks as well.
My backyard rink is up again here in Connecticut. The recent blast of arctic air has set us up for one of the finest stretches in Bucci Heritage Garden history. The kids have skated eight days in a row and 10 out of the past 12. Free ice, 30 feet from the back door.

A Weekend To Honor (Sort of) Mullet Men

Word leaked out yesterday that ESPN’s Barry Melrose was departing the TV studio and returning to the bench in the NHL, in Tampa. The Tampa media today appears to have verified the stunning news. We’re stunned. It’s been 13 years since Melrose coached in the NHL; the league has changed dramatically in that time, and [...]

Bucci Gets a Little Overexcited

In his latest bout of Penguin love (hmm, I suppose that phrase could generate some non-traditional search hits), ESPN columnist and host John Buccigross drew some questionable comparisons, including the “almost joyless” Detroit Red Wings’ resemblence to the 1980 Soviet Red Army team, and the Pittsburgh Penguins’ potentially miraculous victory potential. Here’s the excerpt that [...]

NHL Playoff Prognostications – Blind Man's Bluff

Making predictions in any sport is a challenge–otherwise by now we’d all have bled the Vegas sports books dry and be jetting across North America to attend NHL playoff games. Oh, and I’d purchase a home in St. Lucia for the off-season (got to keep Mrs. OC happy).
We’ve discussed the frequent futility of preseason predictions [...]

ESPN's Scott Burnside Harts Alex Ovechkin

Echoing fellow ESPN writer John Buccigross‘ opinion from last week, Scott Burnside comes down firmly on the side of Ovie for MVP:
The debate over whether Alexander Ovechkin should be awarded the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player has been long and increasingly ponderous.
Every night, Ovechkin continues to distance himself from his competition. Even [...]

John Buccigross Doles Out the 2008 NHL Hardware

ESPN columnist John Buccigross published his picks for the NHL’s awards this season. Washington Capitals’ head coach Bruce Boudreau is his Jack Adams runner-up (to Detroit’s Mike Babcock) . . . but here’s Bucci’s pick for the Hart Memorial Trophy:
Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals. This is the season of Ovechkin. No. 8 is a gigantic personality; [...]

John Buccigross: SportsCenter Anchor, NHL columnist, and … OFB Reader?

Over the holiday weekend two weeks ago, pucksandbooks played a “what if” game concerning the future of Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. In the post, he suggests that “should the Caps and Ovechkin arrive at an impasse in new deal discussions, excruciatingly painful though it may be, a deal with the Kings could [...]

Just Hand Us the Cup

Hockey luminaries Gary Bettman and 2007-08 Jack Adams Award winner Glen Hanlon loom large these days. Knowing the commissioner as I do, it’s virtually certain he’ll insist on senseless redundancy, and not cancel the remainder of the NHL season and instead mandate that the Caps complete the remaining 79 games on their schedule. Insanity is [...]

OFB Book Report – Jonesy: Put Your Head Down & Skate

The Middle Atlantic Press was kind enough to send us an advance copy of their newest title, Jonesy: Put Your Head Down & Skate, by former Washington Capital Keith Jones. Drafted in the seventh round of the 1988 draft by the Caps, Jones also played for Colorado and Philadelphia.
“Jonesy is the story of Keith’s [...]

Bucci on Wheeler (and Ovechkin)

John Buccigross weighs in on the amazing Blake Wheeler goal in his latest ESPN column:
[To] Blake Wheeler from the University of Minnesota hockey squad: Dude, I was anchoring “SportsCenter” on Saturday night when you scored that goal. It was No. 2 on Top Plays. No. 2! That would have been the lead of the whole [...]
