Godfrey Tearing Up the OHL

By Gustafsson
Thursday, October 18, 2007

Soo Greyhound Defenseman Josh GodfreyI had a quick email exchange with the Caps’ 2007 2nd round draft pick Josh Godfrey today. I asked him how the season was going; he said he’s off to a good start with 7 goals and 7 assists in the first 10 games. Um… “a good start” is a bit of an understatement.

After hearing those numbers, I pulled up the OHL website to see how he ranks among scoring leaders. It should come as no surprise that John Tavares is leading the league with 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points in 9 games. Godfrey, however, is tied with fellow Sault Ste. Marie Greyhound forward James Livingston for 8th-most points, and is 3rd among defensemen in the league.

Off to a good start, indeed.

Gretzky’s OHL Record Broken

By Gustafsson
Saturday, March 17, 2007

Wayne Gretzky is the owner of one less record in the books. Last night at the Ottawa Civic Center, Oshawa General Center John Tavares scored his 70th and 71st goals of the season in a 7-4 loss against the Ottawa 67’s. Tavares’ two goals broke the record for most goals in the Ontario Hockey League by a sixteen-year-old. Gretzky formerly held the record with 70.

Tavares could pad his stats with a game against the 67’s today and closing the season tomorrow against the Brampton Battalion.

He isn’t eligible for the NHL Draft until 2009.

And speaking of virtuoso OHL performances, also last night, Pat Kane of Dale Hunter’s London Knights went for 4 and 3 against Erie. He well could be on the draft board when the Caps pick this June.
