A Signing, and Another Sign Perhaps of Winter Classic Fun in Washington

The Capitals today announced the signing of right wing prospect Dmitry Kugryshev, their second-round selection in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. The pact is a three-year entry level one.
Kugryshev is in his second season skating in North America, for Patrick Roy and the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. In 64 games this season Kugryshev, who [...]

Another Bumper Crop of Caps’ Kids Slated for This Year’s World Juniors

Marcus Johansson, the Capitals’ pick at no. 24 of the first round at this past June’s Entry Draft, will captain the Swedes at the World Junior Championships at month’s end, general manager George McPhee told me at Thursday night’s Caps-Panthers’ game. Moreover, his performance with Farjestads in the Swedish Elite League (7 goals, 6 assists [...]

Kudos For Kugryshev

According to The Hockey News, our favorite blogging Capitals prospect is the top rookie scorer in the QMJHL.

A Prospect Who Scores and Avoids Penalties

Washington Capitals’ 2008 second-round pick Dmitri Kugryshev has enjoyed a super solid rookie season in North America. As March play in the Q begins, the Quebec Remparts’ right wing is lodged at the top of the rookie scoring tally. But we’re also noticing the modest numbers in his modest PIMs column.

Kugryshev Gets Candid

He also responds directly to message board comments on his size and strength.

Father and son, as you might imagine, talk a [...]

Opening Day Herbies from Gabby

One of the most dramatic scenes in the movie ‘Miracle’ occurs when Head Coach Herb Brooks punishes his American squad after an underwhelming draw against Norway in an exhibition game leadup to the 1980 Olympics. Brooks channels his fury into an excruciating post-game set of ‘Herbies.’
An amazing spectacle of comparable torture took place out at [...]

More Red Lamp-Lighting from Russia

Back in June, we had a chance to ask Capitals’ General Manager George McPhee about progress and success the organization has enjoyed with the Entry Draft. He agreed then with our assessment that recent Capitals’ drafts had been markedly better than those in his first years on the job in D.C. Because the Capitals did [...]
