Good Teams Win Lucky When They’re Not Good

In the early 1980s, as the Washington Capitals matured from doormat to strong Patrick division challenger to the dynastic Islanders, it wasn’t uncommon for them to skate in dominant fashion against established and elite teams and come up short. I thought about those Capitals’ teams on Tuesday night, as the 2010 Capitals, the East’s elite, [...]

What To Expect When the Winged Wheelers Roll into Washington

Being from Detroit I have a some fluency with what is happening this season to Motown’s Winged Wheelers. The back-to-back defending Western Conference champions have had their share of struggles, but they are not a team to overlook. Despite their struggles the Wings remain just as potent a threat sans Marian Hossa, Johan Franzen, and [...]

OFB Undergraduates Unleashed — Home for the Holidays and Hockey

We asked our two undergraduate associates, Andrew Tomlinson and Alexander Perlmutter, both liberated from their respective universities for the holidays this week, to detail what this winter break would mean to them in terms of taking in pucks without the obligations of class schedules, term papers or exams looming. Turns out neither has interest in [...]

Imagine an NHL Without Detroit . . . It Could Happen

I watched Wednesday night’s Detroit-Dallas game on the NHL Network within a morbid context. On my commute home last night I read ‘Detroit: A City on the Brink,’ published last month in The Week magazine. I recommend it as must-reading for all hockey fans and every American.
The narrative in this piece is nothing short of [...]

Not So Quietly Confident

There isn’t a panic in Hockeytown, but there is certainly an undercurrent of uneasiness.
The Detroit Red Wing are facing their first championship-deciding Game 7 in over 20 year; in fact Detroit has never hosted one. After the first two games it looked like it would be a quick series, maybe even a sweep. The Penguins battled back though, and the “Detroit Train of Overconfidence,” as a local radio station calls it, was slowed down a bit.
Slowed, but not derailed.

From Boudreau(x)'s to Brashear, TX: My Summer Vacation

When my cousin in Dallas announced last year that she was getting married, I mentioned to Chanuck that we should go, especially since my parents live in Houston and we could visit there first. For a variety of reasons too boring to list, I decided that it should be a road trip. Surely I must be a masochist- who in their right mind does a 3000-mile drive with an active 13-month-old?

Out in the Heartland, a Rivalry Reborn

The matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks was the Original Six rematch so many fans and perhaps even the NHL wanted, while it was not a close series, it will restart a rivalry.

The Hart of the League

The finalists for the Hart Trophy were announced this week. To no one’s surprise, Alexander Ovechkin was nominated as Most Valuable Player; he will try to win his second in a row. We in Washington know a lot about Ovechkin of course, but maybe not as much about the other two candidates who were nominated. All have good reason to be nominated, and each of them was clearly the MVP of their respective teams. It certainly will be a tough decision, as all three of these players are worthy of the honor.

Matin?©e Open Thread – Caps vs. Red Wings

Most, if not all, of OFB will be at the game today. We’ll leave the TV on for you so you can watch and chat about the game here. Just don’t make a huge mess, please.
