Channeling Pain Into Productivity

The Washington Post’s Tarik El-Bashir has an article in today’s paper about Jose Theodore and the struggles he’s faced since the death of his infant son last year. The tragedy has been extremely difficult for him and his family, but one positive thing has come out of it. Theodore started a charity, Saves For Kids, that will benefit Children’s National Medical Center. Professionally, after some early-season struggles, he has played very well, despite the thoughts that torment him on a regular basis.

Bradley Bandwagon Or Laing Love Train?

On Tuesday, the Caps’ PR man Nate Ewell posted the following on Twitter:
Who’s a bigger cult hero: Laing or Bradley? @dcsportsbog may lure some back to Lainger’s camp http://bit.ly/aWvr0I
The link is an article that the Post’s Dan Steinberg wrote about Quintin Laing and his thoughts on the win streak. However, most of the article was filled with praise for Laing, from his coach and teammates. How could you not like a guy like this?

Top of the Tweet for the Week of December 5

We thought it might be fun and interesting to highlight Top Tweets from the Captials’ Twitter community we came across during the past week. And we’ll probably offer up a roundup of Top Tweets each week. This week was filled with talk of Ovi’s hit and style of play, the Philadelphia massacre, some vague indiscretion [...]

On Frozen Pod, Episode 3 – Lost In Washington Post Wonderland

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post and the D.C. Sports Bog graciously hosted us recently in an infamous colleague’s office. We discussed local media’s bandwagon embrace of the very winning Capitals, and if it was likely to last; if the Caps became consistent winners, could there be a re-orienting of local media’s coverage hierarchy; and would he get a tattoo when the Caps win the Cup.

Conversion to the Caps

Even though it’s hard to get excited about the Nationals these days, Dan Steinberg always seems to find something worthwhile. One of his latest missives from spring training is about Ross Detwiler, a left-handed pitcher from Missouri. Detwiler, as it turns out, is a hockey fan. While he’s primarily a Blues fan, he is starting to follow the Caps.

In China, Michael Nylander Is Tending Bar (sort of)

Dan Steinberg, newly arrived in China for the world’s biggest quadrennial corruption party the Olympics, has renamed his blog the Beijing Sports Smog — though he has not found the smog.¬† Already he’s made a marvelous discovery over there: a sports bar located in the heart of the Chinese capital partly owned by the Capitals’ [...]

A Look Back at Bengt

The Capitals’ first-round pick of Anton Gustafsson has given everyone a chance to take a look back at the career of his father, Bengt (or Bengt-?Öke as he is better known outside of the NHL). Dan Steinberg spent some time digging through the Post archives and unearthed a few gems.
Here are a few samples:
Dec., 1979:“There [...]

The End of the Magical 1998 Run to the Finals

We recently reminisced about the ten-year anniversary of a golden moment: when Joe Juneau’s goal propelled the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance.
Today, Steinz looks back on D.C. Sports Bog to the day the run ended with excerpts from the Post’s coverage 10 years ago. It’s a good read and, lest you [...]

First Significant Offseason Personnel Development for HockeyWashington

It’s a sunny Wednesday indeed. As heard on 3WT and reported by Dan Steinberg, Tony Kornheiser has accepted an early retirement/cost-cutting buyout from the Washington Post.

Tony Kornheiser photograph as originally seen on Extreme Mortman.
Kornheiser, a gifted writer when he wanted to be, more or less (more, actually) abandoned his duties as a sports columnist at [...]

The Color of Success

My good friend Eric McErlain didn’t pick a good night to play hookie from the hockey rink. But he doesn’t have much red in his wardrobe anyway.
But first thing’s first. I asked for one WaPost columnist to attend Tuesday night and George Solomon sent two, including himself. There were enough Post reporters in attendance last [...]
