How You Blow a 3-0 Lead, Ovi’s Two Goals, and Was Brooks Laich’s Fight a Good Idea?

Your most burning questions about the Caps’ 4-3 overtime loss to the division rival Winnipeg Jets on Friday answered: –Should people be concerned the Caps blew a 3-0 lead? –Chemistry: Perreault and Ovechkin –Brooks Laich dropped the gloves for the second time this season: right or wrong call at that point of the game?

Caps Find a Way to Win Post-Deadline

By 50 minutes into an NHL game, you’ve begun to draw conclusions about the teams you’ve just witnessed. And it’s (hopefully, if you’re a reporter) left you with questions: one team overall exhibited fairly solid play, fairly good energy throughout the evening, punctuated by some stellar shifts and shots on goal that just couldn’t finish.  [...]

Hitting the Reset Button

I never slow down to peek at roadside car wrecks, but I am going to blog a bit about our barely moving wreck of a hockey team. I’m here with a good deal many more questions than answers, and a lot of dark thoughts. Principal among them: How did the wreck happen? I welcome both [...]

‘It’s a Team That Lacks an Identity’

On at least three occasions during Monday night’s national television broadcast the NBC Sports studio tandem of Mike Milbury and Jeremy Roenick explicitly alluded to the Capitals lacking any discernible identity. It’s a sentiment I began expresing on this blog about two years ago. And it’s a lead reason why I find it, in year [...]

Caps Succeed in Losing Weirdest Game of NHL Season

If you thought Thursday’s Capitals vs. Jets game had one of the weirdest endings of any recent NHL game, you’re not alone. Four goals in the third period–one on a Dustin Byfuglien shot from center ice that deflected off Karl Alzner’s stick– sent a game that had been previously scoreless into overtime and finally a shootout [...]

Washington Capitals in the Wayback Machine?

Watching tonight’s Washington Capitals game, as well as their recent victory over Boston, felt eerily familiar. The Caps’ roster was relatively devoid of superstars, they fought hard, beat a better team (vs. Boston) and lost a close one to a divisional rival tonight.

Without Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Mike Green, this Capitals team is surprisingly similar to the Capitals of almost a decade ago… a hard-charging team that delighted and sometimes frustrated its fans.

How so, you ask? Read on… and while these comparisons are far from perfect, consider them food for thought:

A Priceless Goal

Early in the third period Sunday, Capitals forward Jason Chimera made a move up the left wing into the Carolina Hurricanes’ zone. Usually, his speed means he’s there by himself, but today, thanks to what seemed a more deliberate pace, there was company—Joel Ward on the opposite boards, and in the center rookie defenseman Dmitry [...]

Winning Streak Stays Alive for Capitals: “We’re Getting Our Mood Back,” Says Brouwer

It’s so much nicer to evaluate games when you’re winning. That’s the situation the Capitals find themselves in now after last night’s 3-1 win over Calgary, which extended (to 4) their longest winning streak since they put together 7 at the beginning of the season. Yes, since that 7-game run, they’ve changed some of their [...]

Ovi Rattles the Sabre: Washington 3 / Buffalo 1

A Statement Win?

Remember when third periods late in the Boudreau era were hold-on-for-dear-life and cover-your-eyes stanzas? Suddenly, under Coach Hunter, they are statement frames for the Caps. Production, derived from patience, slow but steady absorption of a radically new system, and increasing confidence, appears to arriving. A few quick thoughts: Is the Beast back? In a modest [...]
