NHL to New Media: Go Fly a Kite

This news, delivered last night by AOL Fanhouse, incensed me. In the epitome of Neanderthal progressivism, the NHL, beginning this season, is going to implement a ban on access by bloggers to visiting locker rooms at all arenas. Because you know, the collective work of hockey bloggers the past five-plus years has been, on the [...]

Debut of the Ewell Cup

There were actually two sets of fierce competition out of the ice at KCI yesterday. The Duchesne Cup was decided during Tuesday’s lunch hour, but that was followed by the main event: the inaugural Ewell Cup, named for the host of the annual media skate, Capitals’ Vice President of Communications, Nate Ewell. WNST’s Ed Frankovic [...]

Matty Love from WaPost

He’s the story of Training Camp 2010 thus far, Mathieu Perreault, who’s in a highly competitive battle for an open center spot on this year’s Capitals’ roster. He’s auditioning against first-round draft picks, veteran free agents, and even a host of hockey observers in the media who to this day refuse to believe what Capitals’ [...]

A Blend of Skill and Grit Wins the Duchesne Cup

We couldn’t help but notice that the Duchesne Cup squad that went out and acquired a Tier I enforcer in the offseason — Ovi’s Army, which featured D.J. King — proved triumphant in the opening week competition that concluded at KCI yesterday.

Winter Classic Likely To Be a Memory Lane Moment for Capitals

They come from Sweden, Russia, and across North America, but the idea of playing an NHL game outdoors is bringing the Washington Capitals back to their roots.

“It’s something we did when we were younger, to play outside,” said forward Nicklas Backstrom, who will have family coming from Sweden for the 2011 Winter Classic in Pittsburgh. ““I’m really excited right now, and I think everybody’s excited.”

Backstrom estimated he was 11 or 12 the last time he played outdoors. He said the area where he lived in Sweden didn’t get an indoor rink till he was 13.

Market Demand Response

It isn’t just select bloggers and a healthy contingent of Caps’ fans who believe an upgrade in toughness is overdue on this team. There are players attending training camp this year who signed with Washington and Hershey this summer who want the dirty jobs, none of whom is named D.J. King. I was in the [...]

Duchesne Cup Day 2: Ovi’s Army Overpowers

This is so Ovi: The opening score in Monday’s Duchesne Cup scrimmage between groups A and C was scored by the A team’s Mike Knuble — guess where on the ice — off a corner feed from his Russian linemate, and as Alexander Ovechkin skated back to his bench and received outstretched glove-tap congrats from [...]

Dear Mr. Fantasy, Play Us A Game

The good folks at Fantasy Hockey Scouts asked me to be their Capitals expert again for their annual Bloggers Breakout Q&A. Each year they poll the blogosphere for team-related and league-wide analysis; my pick last season of Mike Knuble as breakout player earned high praise in retrospect, despite some initial doubts (“Really? You’re picking a 37-year-old for a breakout season?” Yes, really.).

A Survey of Local Caps’ Media: Evaluating the Offseason

In the leadup to this fall’s training camp I reached out to local media long devoted to covering the Caps and asked them to respond to a single line of inquiry: relative to where they imagined the Caps to be as claimants for legitimate Stanley Cup contention in the immediate aftermath of last April’s seven-game [...]
