A Mountain of Honor

Never short on creativity, Yahoo’s Greg Wyshynski has greatly helped alleviate the doldrums of August with his Faces of Mt. Puckmore series on the Puck Daddy blog. Each NHL organization has four seminal faces represented, as chosen by bloggers for the team. My only raised eyebrow with the exercise is including all 30 NHL clubs […]

Sometimes the Best Moves for Improvement Arrive from Within

For just about the entire offseason, we have been preaching that the Caps need to make a move and sign someone, anyone, to make their team better. After two disappointing postseasons in a row, you would think the front office would be aggressive when it came to filling holes on the team.

Antidote Heatwave: Pucktalk in Titletown

What began several years ago as a humble and modest offseason gathering of American Hockey League broadcasters for a weekend of golf and poker (and a few puck sodas) has given rise to a full-fledged meet-and-greet with the broadcasters event for the hockey-loving community of Hershey, Pa.  For each of the past three years, radio […]

Crafting High-End Hockey Sticks

In this clip, you’ll see how carbon-fiber EASTON hockey sticks are created . . . it’s a pretty cool six minutes, particularly the automated slap-shot machine in the final testing (I want one!). Too bad it only shoots at 75 m.p.h.—perhaps that’s why Ovie’s and Green’s cannon-blasts seems to snap their sticks like twigs at inopportune moments.

OFB and TBD Team Up

TBD.com, which will be launched soon, is a “hyper-local” site to cover news and sports in DC. TBD is owned by Allbritton Communications, which also owns Politico, NewsChannel 8 and ABC7; NewsChannel 8 is going to be rebranded as TBD, and ABC7′s website will be folded into TBD.com. While TBD will have approximately 20-30 reporters producing original content, a core part of the site will be the network of bloggers they’ve been busy setting up. TBD.com has asked us to join their community network, and we are very excited to become a part of what they’re doing.

Roster Tinkerings for 2010-11

We have what we believe will be some exciting new OFB partnership news for 2010-11 to share with you soon, on a number of fronts, but one we can tell you about right now is particularly exciting: Elisabeth Meinecke of DCist is joining the OFB team, effective immediately. I could tell you that I’m excited […]

Less than Classic Marketing Instincts

A consumer of NHL hockey for more than three decades, I’ve never once imagined it a clever and effective marketing idea to take NHLers, place them out on a football field, and have them fire pucks through the goalposts and toss footballs around to promote an outdoor hockey game, and yet that’s precisely what the […]

Where in the world is Karl Alzner?

No one knows where Karl Alzner will be on Wedsnday night, August 18th. Bill Rohland and Danny Rouhier on 106.7 The Fan will call Karl Alzner and everyone will try to guess where Karl Alzner is. Winner gets an autographed puck. Here are the details via Overtime with Bill Rohland on 106.7 The Fan.

Vecherinka With RMNB

So a major shout-out is in order for the intrepid crew of Russian Machine Never Breaks, who hosted a combination anniversary/charity party over the weekend. The event was a blast, the beverages plentiful, and the OvieBurger? An unholy and delicious union, part burger, part Reuben. It was great to meet Ian, Neil, Peter, Kyle, and […]

Metropolit Seeks Chocolate, Watches

TSN is reporting former Washington Capital Glen Metropolit has signed a two-year contract with EV Zug in Switzerland.

Metropolit was a solid role-player with the Caps, and had his best goal-scoring season last season for the Habs with 16 markers.
