@GEO and HITTMAN: double Amen. IF King stays healthy and IF Coach BB uses him appropriately, this acquisition COULD BE a step in the right direction.

Nobody’s saying King makes the Caps a super-tough team… a crease-clearing defensive monster, for example, is still a gap. But his acquisition is a step in the right direction.

If he stays healthy, he’ll be useful, and his attitude sounds great. But someone who lands himself in the hospital for 40 games every time he gets in a tough fight seems like an iffy person to count on as Enforcer.

Those of us wishing for a tough, experienced defensemen who will clear the crease (and the goalie’s vision) and intimidate near the net – that’s a different type of toughness, and King won’t help that.

Love your writing style and enjoyed the post. Still, I can’t get excited about a guy who’s played only 13 games in two years due to injuries. Why tie up nearly $1.0 million in salary for a guy who breaks his hand in a fight and is out the rest of the season. To me, it sends the message of desperation. If we really want to enjoy our new-found “toughness,” I guess we’ll have to make sure we’re there for opening night versus the Devils or we’ll have to wait until fall 2011 when he’s healthy again.

King will be a 3rd or 4th liner that the caps will teach to skate with the rest of them, even if Bruce dosnt use him to send a message with, just having the option to let him off his chain will prevent teams from taking liberties. And As far as being a better fighter then Simon? He may throw punches better but Simon struck fear into the hearts of every player that looked at him, friend or foe.

There’s some great unknown with King, brought about especially by two significant injuries the past two seasons. But you can’t ignore how high up the enforcement ladder McPhee went in landing this Top Cop. They didn’t land just any big body, but a guy who literally bloodied the Boogeyman back in March. (Writer pauses to take drag off unfiltered Marlboro.) He might be a better fighter than Chief or Simon were. We aren’t going to see him on the second unit PP.

The only problem with picking up King is if Boudreau will use him the way that he should be used. D.J. King is the guy you tap on the shoulder or give “the nod” to go after someone for roughing up Ovi or Semin. In the past, when Bruce had an enforcer (remember Brash?) I seldom recall times when I could tell Gabby sent a message.
