hockey is still not hot here in the US…I sat in a bar some 17 years ago desperately wanting to watch the 7th game tied game Stanley Cup final and the barmaid looked at me and said: “Can’t see you the patrons want to watch basketball?”. It was really gross.
Bawwwwwwww a niche sport that is only popular to the few loyalists and majority bandwagoners isn’t getting as much attention as the local football team. Bawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
In fairness, it is a lot cheaper to get to Ashburn than Montreal. Maybe a better comparison would be Game 2 to minicamp.
WashPost to Ashburn – 35 miles
WashPost to Montreal – 600 miles
Just saying . . .
Sure we would all love the Caps to get more media attention, but the title ‘Media Resource Mismanagement’ is more than a fair bit of a misnomer.
If you were in charge at WaPo, what would you do? Send 8 reporters to Montreal, thus sky-rocketing the expense report to an unfeasible figure?
Also, keep in mind that while the Caps are certainly the hot team in DC right now, DC is about the Redskins. WaPo is simply catering to their primary DC-sports readership while trying to balance the budget.
Now if WaPo were to have sent 8 reporters to Montreal and 2 to Redskins camp on Sunday, then that there would be an actual case of ‘Media Resource Mismanagement’.
In Montreal for the 2009 Draft, we drove 11 – 12 hours because it one hell of an expensive flight.
Even considering distance, that’s pathetic–despite fine jobs by Tarik & Dan, the Post still doesn’t get it.
How many do they need? One in the press box, one in the locker room, and what else? If the media are going to survive, streamlining is a good thing.
Mind you, eight at mini camp does seem a bit much.
And the Skins bloooooow…
Do you want to Post to send Mike Wise to MTL?
If you’re making the trip.

Get their house beer. Fries made with duck fat and pigs feet stuffed w/ foie gras. you won’t eat for a week after.
The PDC mashed potatoes are awesome as well.
May I suggest priorities are out of whack?’ Eight media at a minicamp for a sucky NFL team that’s months away from training camp, vs only two for the BEST team in DC in any sport that’s in playoff mode? Give me a break.
More whining from the hockey community.
Personally, I do not want any more attention towards the hockey world. I do not want borderline-tabloid attention to each and every player and record of every action they ever do.
Hockey is as competitive as every, selling out, with sufficient TV coverage.
I mean the playoffs are intense, series tied, ect.
What more do you want.
We have struck the perfect balance between, hyper over-analysis, tabloid drama bullshit; and sports who don’t have enough competition to be legitimate.
Let them go to the Skins’ practice that suits me just fine.
They quality of journalism will only lessen when more people muddle the facts, and nothing is left to report except the bowel movements of the players, and the menstrual cycles of the player’s wives.
Just for context’s sake, Montreal media made credential requests numbering more than **85** for game 1 of this series. Obviously, they have the travel the same 600 miles.
The local newspapers and sports talk channels would require a change of staff and attitude to cover things like this. Their staff does not follor nor cover hockey. Oh, they all talk about it when Ovie gets suspended, or there is a playoff run. However, they aren’t hockey fans and it shows. So no, I don’t want them to send more people who don’t care about hockey to Montreal. I don’t want them send their “stick and ball” people to cover a NASCAR event.
They COULD fire a few of those stick and ball people (how many do you need to cover the hapless Nats?) and maybe hire a couple of hockey, Nascar, MMA people who might actually watch those sports and comment on it.
Why do think we are reading “onfrozenblog”? “Traditional” media is busy covering NFL minicamp and the Nationals.
I’m shocked, SHOCKED, that Wise didn’t make the trip.
It certainly isn’t fair to compare how many Montreal media people came to DC. It’s the #1 team in the city and the only one in the “four” major sports.
I agree that the Post sending 2 people to Montreal is lacking.
But, assuming Dan is being truthful and there’s no reason to think he’s not, if Skins traffic dominates the WAPO website, it makes sense that they devote the preponderance of their resources to the team.
Hopefully, if the Caps continue through the playoffs, they will pick up additional coverage.
I’m shocked, SHOCKED, that Wise didn’t make the trip.
