Gold Medal Girls Gone Wild

Your team just won the gold medal in hockey. What do you do? You guzzle crap beer and try to drive a Zamboni, of course! Sounds like fun to me (except for the crap beer part; it’s gotta be the good stuff). However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was not amused and wants an explanation. For their part, the Canadian women’s hockey team apologized.

Many media personalities felt the situation was overblown, and shared their thoughts via Twitter. Among others, “Hockey Night in Canada’s” Elliotte Friedman remarked, “In other news, IOC to investigate last 100 Stanley Cup Final celebrations.” Even Mike Freeman of CBS Sports commented, “Can’t believe Canadian women apologized for drinking champagne and smoking cigars after gold medal. Not an issue if men had done it.” That’s the real issue here; why are the women being chastised for doing the same thing that the men do? (I don’t know if the men also try to drive Zambonis, but I’ll assume they do.) Personally, I think that if they had kept the celebration in the locker room, it wouldn’t have been an issue, but then again, why shouldn’t they celebrate the way they want? On the other hand, if this was the US women’s team, imagine what the Canadians would be saying about it.  It’s so conflicting.

Not surprisingly, one company took advantage of the situation for some publicity:

“Although the International Olympic Committee is ready to rain on the celebration parade of the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team, one company stands behind the cigar smoking and wine guzzling gold medal champions, Gurkha Cigars! The luxury cigar brand, Gurkha Cigars, is in full support of the group of athletes that were simply celebrating their victory and has even overnighted cases of their new Triad Cigar in order to show it.
“Whether they can or can’t attend Sunday’s closing ceremonies, these ladies will be celebrating in high luxury with $50 a pop smokes and $1,000 cases. Gurkha has also created a Facebook fan page so others can show their support on behalf of the hockey team: Support Canada’s Women’s Hockey Team.”

At least they’ll be smoking better cigars; here’s hoping a microbrewery steps in and sends them some cases of real beer. Ladies, just say no to Coors Light!

    What? Did the IOC think they were going to go home and knit? Have a cup of tea? Is the IOC investigating Jon Montgomery for public consumption and public drunkeness? ( http://bradcran.com/vancouver_verse/on-women%E2%80%99s-gold-equality-and-the-ioc/ ) If they’re going to play hockey (which I fully support as my daughter is a goalie on a boy’s midget team) then they are also going to celebrate and there’s nothing wrong with champagne, beer and cigars.

    When I saw that title, I imagined there’d be more revealing photos. Dammit, you got me there.

    I agree, they should have gotten off the ice surface before poppin’ the tabs and lightin’ up. Otherwise, it shouldn’t be that big a deal.

    Also agree the Canadians would have given Team USA a lot of greif, if our gals were to behave the same way. All our accomplishments mean nothing, while theirs are the greatest to ever happen. Anything they do is fine, while everything we do is in poor taste.

    So harsh, people. We Canadians don’t dislike you nor would we blow it out of proportion. It’s just not in our nature.USA has been simply awesome at these Olympics in all events, we may be slightly envious but not mean-spirited.
    The ladies’ party spilled out onto the ice after a very hard fought battle with a foe who has proven to be extremely difficult to beat for many years. The stands were nearly empty, but for a few camera-toting stragglers.
    Compete like workhorses and celebrate like rockstars!!!So what!!

    IOC = french for NCAA.

    They just won a Olympic Gold Medal!
    It is not like they did it right after the game, to show poor sportsmanship or rub it in anyones face. Apparently the IOC was upset that one of the Candian players is a month shy of being 19 ( the legal drinking age in BC). This and the competition issue will be used as an excuse to drive womens hockey from the Olympics.
