High Drama in Aboriginal Dress

Pictured here: lead players from last night’s ice dancing competition at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, Russians Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, whom NBC chose to spotlight in prime time in lieu of a certain high-profile hockey game. Core demographic served: those who should be cross-checked in the head.

Those getups rival those of Don Cherry in the flesh (no pun intended). NBC missed the boat in a huge way – not only to cater to existing hockey fans, but to also capture the demographic of potential new fans tuned in and captivated by last night’s magnificent game!!!

These costumes are SOOOOO wrong on so many different levels. I hope their scores for artistic interperetion were adjusted accordingly. I need a check to the head to wipe out the memory of them. Please, put Ovie decking Jagr back on top.

I was shocked to see NBC had the game on msnbc, Duu HHHHHHHHHHHH!They show a “Miracle on Ice” Doc, then dont even let the country witness an amazing sport and game. My Wife and little girl dont even care about the Ice Dancing, so who did care? Those to freaks would have scared them anyway.

it will be interesting to see what NBC does for a CAN/RUS matchup, considering the marquee combatants.

to be honest, i’m happy where hockey is at on a national level. i know the versus deal isn’t great, but i’m happy it isn’t on ESPN either. i don’t need, or want, it to compete with the NBA or NFL, in fears that it may turn into a circus.

let hockey fans be a niche, let hockey fans scour the channels to find our game, let hockey fans argue to others the greatness of our sport.

it keeps the fans more knowledgeable, otherwise, you’d have a bunch of yahoos saying ovechkin is better than crosby.

    whoops!

  7. @ PETE: I’m with you regarding the NHL being better off as a niche sport (albeit a large niche). That said, hockey is clearly one of the most compelling Winter Olympic sports; NBC consistently shuffling it off to the side is seemingly inexplicable.

I was actually glad the game was on M(ust) S(how) N(othing) B(ut) C(urling). Didnt have to deal with pointless interruptions, or studio blather.

The worst part was the “expert” commentary
from Mike “The Franchise Killer” Milbury.

My big issue was with three marquee matchups yesterday and no figure skating on Saturday, why wasnt one of these games scheduled for Saturday instead ?

In fairness (as seen on a small tv at the bar during a commercial break from the hockey game on the big screens when we couldn’t see ski-cross) Oksana, pictured above, greatly reduced her war-paint last night after their previous meeting with native tribes.

Nah, it’s easy to explain. Commericals. There are no TV timeouts in olympic hockey. Much easier to cut away from every other event to run an ad or some mindless fluff piece.

That said, i agree it was downright weird that they plugged the game all day and then didn’t even mention it until they cut to it with under a minute to go. those of us without cable were refresing the browser. painful.
