How do you get your hockey team to be featured prominently on the front page of the Washington Post? Win 12 in a row AND have a player reach 500 career points.
We asked the Capitals this morning if they could tally up the number of A1 instances for the team with the Washington Post, and that’s a tall order — it goes back 35 years. They reminded us of Ovi’s color photo appearance there in June of 2008, when he won the Hart trophy for the first time. In 2009, the team was featured on A1 on three occasions. The Jaromir Jagr trade in July 2001 was another instance, as was Dale Hunter’s holding the Prince of Wales trophy in May of 1998. Do you remember other instances? Share them with us if you do.

Weather Service issues a winter storm warning for Hell, with forecasts predicting 12-24″ of snow.
16 or more inches = 16 wins = Stanley Cup.
It’s like climbing Mt. Everest (barefoot) for the Caps to make it onto the front page of the Post, let alone above the fold on the front of the Sports page. (If a Redskin has scraped his toe in the off-season, we all know that’s enough to bump the Caps). But I cut and saved a few p. A-1 sightings over the years. Along with the ones OFB mentioned: 6/5/98 — banner headline, under the masthead: “Capitals Revel in First Trip to Stanley Cup Finals” + photo and article by Liz Clarke. Also, from earlier that week, I have an undated photo that looks to be from the bottom of A-1, “Capital Heroes” of fans surrounding Joe Juneau when the Caps returned in the early a.m. hours to Piney Orchard after knocking out the Sabres. Says the story is on p. D1, but at least the photo made the Post’s front page.
p.s. My husband and I had a fairly uneventful trip to and from the Fri. night game (Subaru to/from Ballston metro) but it’s hard to blame folks with tougher routes for staying home. It was just us and the snowplow on Wilson Blvd. going home.
