It’s Official: Nylander to Grand Rapids

So long, Nyls!  Just released from Caps’ PR:

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have assigned center Michael Nylander to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Nylander, 37, has played 920 career NHL games for the Capitals, New York Rangers, Boston, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Calgary and Hartford. He has not played an NHL game this season. He spent two weeks in Grand Rapids on a conditioning stint beginning Oct. 21.

Per the Grand Rapids web site:

Nylander will be available to play on Tuesday when the Griffins visit Peoria for an 8 p.m. faceoff against the Rivermen at Carver Arena.

At what point does Nylander’s cap hit come off the books? That’s the only event that matters in this whole affair. I’ve heard it will happen if he is signed by a KHL club or if the Caps release him/buy him out…TL needs to raid his piggy bank.

  3. His salary is off the books for this year, thus today’s recall of Karl Alzner. His salary does not count against the cap, but Washington still has to pay his salary.

However, that is for this year only. We jump back into the same problem next year with one major difference. The no movement clause expires, so they can do what they want without his approval.

Ahh, yes. My question was just answered by the Washington Post earlier today along with another question, “Why isn’t Alzner on the big team yet?” Sad to see Perreault go back to Hershey, but he’s not really putting up much offense and his size and inexperience is a defensive liability…more seasoning required.
