The NHL through Europe's Eyes

The 2006-2007 NHL season was abysmal for the Washington Capitals and for media coverage of hockey in the United Kingdom. That was the year your migrant writer started his university campaign in the ancient and beautiful London. Three years ago I completely forgot (or possibly ignored) how absent ice hockey was from the British sports [...]

Good Bet You'll See Coverage of This on HNIC

So yesterday we opined a bit on unorthodox hockey sweaters (in terms of color), but in no way were we prepared for the look adopted by the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey league on Wednesday night. It was Don Cherry Military Appreciation Night in Kingston. Can you tell?

An Online Date Tonight with Bears and Penguins

While that headline might look like the title of an unsettling YouTube video, worry not; while the Hershey Bears will hopefully be pummeling the BabyPens tonight, it’ll be suitable for family viewing. Better yet, it will be free viewing!

AHL Live is granting free access to their video feeds tonight, Friday, October 23. Click here to see the full slate of streaming video for tonight’s AHL games, including the 7:05 p.m. puck drop in Scranton.

On Michael Nylander's Intriguing Next Two Weeks

Over at Puck Daddy yesterday OFB comrade Dmitry Chesnokov published a highly illuminating and meticulously researched piece that lays out what’s viable and what’s not for Michael Nylander’s possible movements out of D.C. in the weeks ahead. You really ought to give it a read.

Another Frightful Third Period, Another Great Escape

It was a victory that was “a lot more difficult than it had to be,” Comcast’s Joe Beninati noted at the close of Thursday night’s broadcast. Ain’t that the truth. The cardiac Caps, they ought to be called. And that’s not flattery. You could say this was a night for secondary scoring, or tertiary scoring, [...]

A Fresh Message for Up North: You Want This Killer in Your Midst

For my new readership in the Great White North this week, I wanted to detail a bit my friendship with Killer. There were two facets I wanted to stress: that our heroes can indeed be very human, and they can, under somewhat miraculous circumstances, become our friends as well; and that this friend named Killer [...]

Killer, Jumping Over the Boards in Media

Our favorite Caps’ alum, Kevin ‘Killer’ Kaminski, is jumping over the boards and stirring the pot a bit in new media space these days. He’s on Facebook now, and the other day he previewed the new hockey season for his Mississippi Riverkings of the Central Hockey League in a studio stop at ESPN Radio’s 92.9 [linky].

He was CHL Coach of the Year last season with the Riverkings.

He’s a “player’s coach,” he told the ESPN radio audience, and he recognizes that with life in hockey’s minor leagues there’s opportunity to have a bit of fun (would you want to go against Killer in a game of paintball???) but also a line between fun and getting down to work.

Should Hockey Players Wear Pink — Ever?

For the third consecutive season, the Hershey Bears will don pink jerseys in a game to raise awareness of breast cancer, during their game against Binghamton at Giant Center this Saturday night. The team will hold a silent auction for all of the sweaters, which will be signed by each wearer, with bid winners announced [...]

Nylander Assigned to Grand Rapids

The Washington Capitals have assigned center Michael Nylander to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) on a conditioning stint, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
