Peasants with Pitchforks, Hand-Helds

The entertaining portion of football Sundays in D.C. these days arrives with Comcast’s post-game show, live from the Bastille FedEx Field. It’s quite a live scene — Chick Hernandez, former Redskins Brian Mitchell, Trevor Matich and Rick ‘Doc’ Walker seated on a stage amid a legion of the livid. As we near Halloween, we well could see jack-o-lanterns with carved visages of Daniel Snyder hurled onto the post-game set, and come to think of it, effigies of the owner aflame.

During the eulogy Comcast invites its viewers to submit text messages of game and season reaction ["text Redskins at 68683"] that it scrolls across the bottom of the screen during the broadcast. I’m sure the station edits out submitted obscenities, but otherwise, the innermost angst of the disaffected flies fast and furious. A sampling from this evening:

For sale, Redskins jersey — cheap!
Hello #1 pick
The postgame show is more interesting than the game
Let’s go Caps!
Was on Metrobus and Redskins offense got on board. Bus did move forward.
Hip, hip . . . wait, we lost again!
When are the open tryouts?
They have a better chance of winning the Va. lottery
Caps for the Cup!
This team makes my brain hurt. I need a beer.
Glad we at least have the Caps!
The postgame show is more interesting than the game . . .
Hey the Caps won last night!
Final straw! I’m done!
C! A! P! S! Caps!Caps!Caps!
Kelli Johnson, marry me, I will take you away from all this

My favorite reflection actually came from Hernandez, who quipped, “The Redskins scored six points today, so did Alexander Ovechkin this week.”

It really is amazing how little good the acquisition of Albert Haynesworth seems to have done them. :P
I don’t get the people who are ready to walk away from the team, though. That’s just kind of sad. I can’t imagine walking away from a team I’ve rooted for since childhood, no matter how much they suck.
I’ve found that those who claim that football >hockey either have small bladders or aren’t bright enough to keep up with hockey. Still, it seems that the Caps are getting more attention becaues of the Redskins stinking. Hopefully they don’t bring a jinx with them XD

Those of us who lived through the Caps’ awful seasons know what you mean Stanley — the only difference to me is that the Caps never had an owner who seemed actively engaged in destroying the team with bad decisions like Snyder is. Still, as terrible as it is that the Skins lost to three un-feated teams this season, I’m sure many die-hard fans will stay loyal… there’s very little logic when it comes to sports fandom, and that’s part of its charm.

Great roundup of the comments. Well, if nothing else, the Redskins’ loss is the Caps’ gain.

My loyalty to the skins will never waiver. I will always be a redskins fan. But my hatred for Snyder and Cerrato have sucked all the hope I have had and then some. I can still be loyal but I’m smart enough to know that this team will never amount to poo poo with dumb and dumber running the show.
It sucks being a Skins fan right now, but as Caps fans we can remember how we were once the laughing stock of the city and the league – it wasn’t a fun time to be a caps fan. But we had hope. Right now as a skins fan – we have no hope – we have Snyder.

If there’s a positive about the futility of Washington’s three other major professional sports franchises it’s that it’s driving fans to Caps games in record numbers. It’s easy to get hooked once you see the game in person and the new fans have a lot of positive pent up energy needing release so I’m all for it. Rock da Red baby!
