Ah, the signs of fall: the leaves are turning, the weather’s getting cooler, and the NHL shop catalog showed up in my mailbox recently. Since I’m in the market for a women’s as well as a kid’s jersey (DC Sports Chicklet quickly grew out of her old one), I was interested to see this season’s offerings from the NHL. Honestly, I don’t know why I was so excited. Here’s what we’ve got (I wasn’t going to besmirch the jersey with a Caps player’s name, and I couldn’t resist Avery):
Isn’t that precious? It’s the women’s “Be Luv’d” jersey. The extended collar! The “retro glitter” on the front! (Retro glitter?) But worst of all? THE HEART IN THE BACK RIGHT CORNER. Can someone please pick up the clue phone and let the NHL know that jerseys don’t have hearts or glitter on them- oh, and they’re not pink?
File this under “jersey foul” for several reasons, mostly because it is something you’d see in New Jersey. It would be hard to see this in person and not want to avert my eyes. I’d feel embarrassed for anyone who wore it. This style is exclusive to both women and girls, because the designers realize that no males would don a faux team jersey with that bizarro collar alone (even if it was pink, glitter, and heart-free).
There’s many women out there who like this garbage. After all, the NHL wouldn’t put it out there if it didn’t sell. But ladies, I’m warning you now: if I see you at a game wearing this monstrosity, I’m going to point and laugh at that little heart on the back. I’ll give girls a pass, but hope that they learn fashion sense from someone other than their parents.
It’s important to note that there are many more options for women than in previous years, so that’s one good thing. There are some definite highlights among the offerings, such as this top that I mentioned several months ago. I really don’t want to keep harping on this issue, but I can’t help it- until women are taken a little more seriously as fans, I’m going to keep beating this dead horse. It seems that every year, it gets worse and worse. Like the pink jerseys weren’t bad enough- now they had to add a heart to them. Even Alyssa Milano wouldn’t do that (well, at least I hope she wouldn’t). Incidentally, she did do this to the Blackhawks- which I can’t decide is acceptable or tacky. Jeans with the team logo on the back pockets? At least they’re good-looking jeans, and THEY DON’T HAVE A HEART ON THE BACK. Seriously, people.

That is an abomination.
I could kind of get it if it were donating some of the proceeds for something like Breast Cancer research. Even then, though, the little heart is absurd and the pink is a ridiculous shade of pink and the line extending from the collar is gross.
The Alyssa Milano jeans aren’t bad but two logos on the pockets are too much. I think one would suffice.
Saw this one and laughed out loud! Seriously? I agree with Sarah, this jersey would be great to raise funds for breast cancer (and of course replace the silly heart with the pink ribbon). Ladies want to wear the team colors in a quality constructed sweater(emphasis here on quality) that is made to fit them. We have more choices than last season but these silly “My Little Pony” themed creations just keep popping up!
I’d rather see girls show up in this than their club attire – at least this shows they realize it’s cold inside a hockey rink.
I would not buy that for my wife. That’s just extremely hideous. Also, a point for creativity on the name, since most would just go for the obvious one.
Anybody know where I can get toddler Caps clothes locally or do I have to go online? I tried Sports Authority, Kettler, etc. I really want to get my son a Caps shirt.
I couldn’t agree more…absolute monstrosity. Totally rediculous. i wouldn’t be caught dead in that thing!!!
Glad I’m not the only one who feels this way!
I think Hockey Mom said it best: “Ladies want to wear the team colors in a quality constructed sweater(emphasis here on quality) that is made to fit them.” YES!
WFY, try Dick’s. I’m surprised Kettler didn’t have anything! There is a definite lack of toddler options in stores, though.
Didn’t the company Ty have a little heart as their logo? Just what woman fans want: a hockey sweater that makes them look like a Beanie Baby.
I was so haapy to see the words I have been using about these ridiculous jerseys for years now here on OFB!!! You forgot to picture the “ice flirt” jersey where every fan wearing it will get mistaken for a member of “Raider Nation”. Can someone also remind Alyssa Milano that in Washington, we like to Rock the RED… and not the NAVY BLUE! Her shirts this season are super cute… but If I’m going to spend over $100 for 2 shirts–I want them in red! (Maybe we we can hold a Scarlet CAPS protest outside of shopNHL.com headquarters)
I get the outrage. I play hockey and it’s hard to find women-specific equipment without pink accents. (Don’t get me started on pink gloves and sticks!) But you said it yourself, DC Sports Chick, women aren’t taken seriously as fans. I don’t see how pointing and laughing is going to change that.
I certainly agree with Hockey Mom that “ladies want to wear the team colors in a quality constructed sweater(emphasis here on quality) that is made to fit them.” But let’s face it. Some women are into pink and glitter. Can’t they be in to that AND hockey?
We really need to be demanding more options for women instead of humiliating anybody who likes pink.
I realize that some women may be into pink jerseys, but I am not. To me, these designs are geared towards young women. I am in my mid-50s and would never wear one. My problem is that the more items like this are purchased, the more those geniuses at NHL marketing will think that that is only what women want, not that some are us are not spending money on merchandise because the men’s items don’t fit and have no desire to wear glitter and pink.
Some people are too sensitive.
It doesn’t bother me. Neither do the personalized jerseys that irritate some.
As long as its Capitals gear, I don’t care.
Its not like pink or personalized jerseys are all that prevalent. Their numbers are sufficiently small that its not worth getting worked up over.
OMG are you kidding me!!! a Heart! ridiculous, and shameful!!! but I have to say excellent way to make the point by customizing an “Avery” jersey LOL, that hammered it home!
Okay, some people like pink. I get that. [The heart is a joke though, unless instead of for breast cancer it's for some heart condition charity.]
But unless pink is to complement another color (like the baby blue the “boy” Penguins wear), what’s wrong with wearing the team colors? Is pink really better than teal (SJ)? Or black like so many teams have? Isn’t red acceptable for girls instead of pink?
It doesn’t bother me. I just don’t understand the need or desire for it.
I too find pink jerseys laughable when you cannot even get a Women’s Road Jersey……
The merchandise and gear sold “for ladies” is very limited and not very flattering. A lot of it is lame or too girly.
Worse, the available jewelry is either nasty looking or just plain boring. Who would want to wear dinky 3/4 inch Capitals logos that practically hide themselves on the ears?
That’s why I made my own earrings using four duplicate copies of one of Semin’s Diamondback cards (with him wearing his home jersey on a metallic silver background).
The main body of the earring design is a 1.5″ circle: a clear acrylic disc base with the sides displaying two neatly cut out circles of the card. This is affixed to a small glass disc which resembles a very thick but transparent puck with red and blue stripes running through it. This in turn is affixed to the hook. The whole thing is held together with eye pins.
More than 2 inches of dangling sparkliness which retains the clarity and excitement of the Capitals in a sporty yet feminine manner, without treading too far into Betsey Johnson realms.
