Smoke, Fire, and Michael Nylander

No one this summer has provided better reporting on Michael Nylander’s purgatory status with the Caps than Sovetsky Sports’ Dmitry Chesnokov. More of that reporting is found in today’s Examiner. Chesnokov reports that none other than Nylander’s former linemate, Jaromir Jagr, told his outlet recently that he detailed life with his KHL club Omsk for [...]

Jethro and Opie Better Leave Their Hand-helds Back at the Tailgate

I can’t withhold my two cents on the story out of the SEC — a bit of cultural bigotry reinforcement if ever there was: earlier this month the Southeastern Conference sent a policy statement to its member schools outlining strict restrictions on the volume of new media activity journalists can engage in while covering the [...]

College Sports Conference to Ban Twitter, Flickr, Cell Phone Pics? Right!

Per the St. Pete Times, it seems the Southeastern Conference is tightening it’s grip on what the media can do during the games. It is further defining “how much audio, video and “real-time” blogging they can do at games, practices and news conferences”. Perhaps you don’t want to undermine the outlets that are paying to broadcast games. I don’t agree with this view, but I can understand the view.

Vacation Reddening the UK

In this installment of summer vacationing photo-sharing from OFB readers, Big Ben meets Big Red. And may the Capitals’ defense this season prove as sturdy at Stonehenge!   Reader Tyler informs, “I was overseas for a couple of weeks, trying to slide in some Caps references. I actually got into a few animated conversations with [...]

Painting the Big Apple Red on Summer Vacation

It’s really one of the things I like best about our readers — carrying forward the passion of winter to summer, and taking to beaches, boats, and mountaintops donned from head to flip-flop in red, and enlivening our forum in summer by sharing the digital delight of the moments.

"Can't-Miss" Carpenter's Legend Lives On

I recently came across a post on Mental Floss (home of the great Don Cherry quiz) titled “Where Are They Now? High School Kids Immortalized By Sports Illustrated” and skimmed it. Then I came to #7.

Prior Out, Arturs Irbe In as Caps' Goaltending Coach

In a very much welcomed breakup of the August routine, I’m out at Kettler Capitals Iceplex this morning, where Arturs Irbe has just been introduced as the Capitals’ new goaltending coach. Dave Prior has left the club after 12 seasons.

Strategic Infiltration: A Goalie Is Hired by Comcast

It is indisputably true that local media coverage of the Capitals has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years, but to quote Robert Frost, we’ve miles to go before we sleep [in satisfaction]. Which makes this bit of news most encouraging: OFB’s favorite goaltender, Tara Wheeler, has been hired by Comcast to be a [...]

Tucker Max Is Mad Max, and the Bane of Women Everywhere

This book will make atheists want to make formal confessions.

A Good Buy for a Great Read

Potomac Books is the publisher this fall of Gabby: Confessions of a Hockey Lifer, co-authored by Hershey Bears’ beat reporter Tim Leone of the Patriot News. While the book is slated for an October release in both the U.S. and Canada, it is available for pre-sale purchase today, both at Potomac’s web site as well [...]
