Our friend Dmitry Chesnokov reports that the Capitals’ young netminder Semyon Varlamov is training with CSK VVA Samara of the KHL.
Sovetsky Sport (via Shaibu-Shaibu) is reporting that Varlamov is training with CSK VVS Samara hockey club. It is not the first time that Varlamov trains with the
“Flyers” (VVS in Russian stands for “Air force”) during the off season.
Varlamov will spend another week and a half in his native Samara and
will leave for Moscow at the end of August for the preseason Olympic
national team camp.
This news should be extremely encouraging to Washington’s fans; few question his talent, but Varlamov has never faced anywhere near the rigors of a full NHL season (nor an AHL one for that matter, as injuries limited his starts to just 27). But getting serious about his off-season training program is a sign that he understands the opportunity that lies ahead, both in the upcoming season and beyond.
