A Farewell to Reggie Fleming

Reggie Fleming — who, in this blogger’s opinion, sounds like the inspiration for the iconic Reggie Dunlop of “Slap Shot” — passed away today at the age of 73. Check out The New York TimesStu Hackel’s article about Reggie’s tough-as-nails hockey life, including video of both Reggie’s fights and his reminiscences regarding a career that is as impressive today as it was then.

Mr. Fleming could score, including a critical goal in the Chicago Blackhawks’ last Cup in 1961; but he was best remembered as the definition of a hockey tough guy. He even fought Bobby Orr! Mr. Fleming’s recollection of his formative NHL moments perhaps best summed up his approach to the game:

“My first game in Chicago, there was a brawl and I just sort of
watched,” Fleming said. “In the dressing room, Rudy Pilous, he was our
coach, he said: ‘Fleming, if your buddies are in trouble, don’t just
stand there. Your job is to help them out, fight for them. If you
don’t, you might as well pack your bag, you’re no use to us.’ So I went
out and fought. That was always my job, eh?”
