Russian Prospect Coming to D.C.

Mikhail YunkovWith the news swirling around Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov regarding their possible moves to the KHL, it’s good news for Capitals fans to see a young prospect moving the other way.

Mikhael Yunkov, the Capitals’ 62nd overall draft pick in 2004, has expressed his desire to play in North America next year, and will be attending the Capitals’ rookie camp. The playmaking pivot could compete for a spot on the Capitals’ roster — after all, too many good centers is an oxymoron — or perhaps spend the year in Hershey.

Dmitry Chesnokov provided this quote from Yunkov on The Examiner‘s Web site today:

“At the end of summer I am going to America to participate in the rookie
camp. My contract with Spartak Moscow has ended and I decided to try
myself in the NHL. I understand clearly that it will be difficult to
make it. I will most probably go for the entire season, even if I am
sent to the AHL at first.”
