Depending on whether you find victory possible in defeat, you may find this junior hockey result from this past Thursday noteworthy: Shattuck St. Mary’s 3, Team Maryland 2. That was the outcome up in Pittsburgh at the Tier I 18 and Under National Championships, which conclude this weekend. Team Maryland actually held a 2-1, second-period lead over the Minnesota powerhouse Prep program, whose sweater-wearers have included the likes of Jonathon Toews and Sidney Crosby. I find it a fantastic achievement, and a real benchmark of how far local youth hockey progressed of late.
It’s a level loaded with elite talent up in Pittsburgh — Detroit Little Caesars is there, too. Team Maryland went 0-2-1 in preliminary play but was more than competitive in each game. USA Hockey’s web site has all the details.
