I’m buying the pre-deadline angst and an unprepared rookie goalie excuse until the next loss.

I wonder if Kari Lehtonen will get dealt. I heard today on the radio that Detroit was a possibility. I wonder what Osgood thinks about that?

Columbus made a good move, since they don’t need Leclaire. I’ve watched Steve Mason play goal for the BlueJackets for most of the year and the guy is the real deal. I rank him right up there with Brodeur (ok, not at exactly the same level). Mason has a case to make not just for Rookie of the Year, but the Vezina as well.

It is actually a conditional 5th round pick. If the Penguins make the playoffs it becomes a 4th round pick and if they win a round it becomes a 3rd round pick.

Maybe they are just trying to get him closer to the HHOF. I personally would have loved to see Eminger back because he played well in the playoffs last season. Heck, we could have traded Nyles for Kolzig and Eminger….I would have been happy with that, then Olie could have retired a Cap.

Maybe Kolzig was a monetary situation?
I like Carolina’s double-deal to get Cole back for them.
I know many people have expressed being upset that Nylander wouldn’t waive his no-movement clause, but that clause was smart business on his part. He’s not the one to get mad at (contractually anyway).

Mirtle’s reporting that the Kolzig trade will get Tampa under the mid-point in the salary range so they can get revenue sharing dollars. Don’t know if that’s accurate, but considering the struggles that are going on it may be right. (Provided they can dump Gary Roberts as well.)
For the Caps it looks like it may have been a seller’s market out there and the asking prices were too high. After all, with only a limited number of teams out of the playoffs, demand is much higher than supply for a change. (Besides, I think last year’s heist can’t be repeated every year.)

  51. Overall, I think the Caps made out okay.
The only player I was really interested in was Chris Pronger, but from Tarik’s post on his blog, he isn’t worth Alzner AND Varlamov AND Carson.
If the Caps were really after another goaltender, the deal would’ve have to have been a gut-busting blockbuster. The chatter here would’ve been really divided.
Some trades that I’ve seen don’t make much sense. For example, I don’t think Derek Morris was worth those three players that went Phoenix’s way.
It looks like Calgary’s prime for a Cup run this year. Maybe having Leopold back in the fold will help Dion Phaneuf.
It’s nice to see Erik Cole back in Carolina. The Canes can make a push into the playoffs…and hopefully push Pittsburgh out of the picture.
@OFB crew: are bloggers hanging out anywhere after the game on Sunday? I’ll be in town for the weekend and will be in the building for the Caps/Pens and was wondering if you meet up with your readers/other bloggers after games.

“Most intriguing was the complicated deal with Tampa Bay that arrived well after the 3 p.m. deadline and required special approval from NHL headquarters. The Leafs added the contracts of Olaf Kolzig (injured, out for the season), Jamie Heward (concussed, out for season), oft-injured AHLer Andy Rogers and a fourth-round pick for Marlie defenceman Richard Petiot.
What the heck was that all about?
Basically, the Leafs bought a fourth-round pick (actually Carolina’s) from Tampa for about $500,000. The Lightning, a franchise absolutely spurting red ink, was willing to sell that pick just so they don’t have to pay Kolzig, Heward et al for the rest of the season. They saved even more dollars by dealing away Mark Recchi and Steve Emminger.
Whether Rogers or Petiot might be a viable NHLer one day is almost beside the point.
So while on paper the Leafs can boast of a goaltending lineup of Curtis Joseph, Martin Gerber and Kolzig, it’s a virtual group, really, that would only be meaningful if it was 1999.”
