you can’t be serious-
in the same segment, he showed obvious dislike for “those goofy soccer guys” saying “we don’t want our canadian fellas” to act like them. come ON, this is some OBVIOUS malintent here!
and if you want to take cherry’s comments “in context,” then you need to look at ovi’s celebrations in the same way: he does not discriminate; he celebrates EVERY time because he loves what he’s doing whether his team is winning or losing, and because he knows he owes it to the fans, who are the reason he’s getting that huge steady paycheck.
cherry takes ovi’s actions and uses them to try (“try” being the operative word there) to back up his ludicrous xenophobic ideals while ignoring ovi’s reason for doing them: he loves the sport, the team, and the fans. i’m pretty sure there could not be more honorable motivation.

As a Canadian, and a Capitals fan, I am disappointed with Don for these comments. Please do not lump us all in the same group with him. Are we all a little jealous that the best offensive player in the league isn’t from Canada, yeah. Luckily, we have the most offensive analyst! You can’t deny either guy’s passion for the game. I hope Cherry’s prognostication is inaccurate because the game cannot afford to lose it’s most flashy player.

Amazing… is Cherry involved in some consiparacy with NBC. After all, he obviously wants to sleep with Crosby just like the NBC execs who keep picking the Pens, a team outside the playoff bubble, for their Game of the Week. Most of the clips he show of Ovie’s goals were from his rookie and sophomore years. Get an updated highlight reel.
He’s scored 45 times this year and Cherry’s just pissed it’s not someone from North America like his boyfriend Sid.
Here’s to the CAPS and Ovie who’s brought the sport back to the forefront in DC!

Coach Cherry is out of line.
Many Canadians like Craig Laughlin say things like “he’s old school” when he says stuff like this and pushes “the Canadian Way.” After hearing him rail against Ovechkin and Datsuyk last night while praising Sidney Crosby it’s clear he’s just a xenophobic pro-Canadian, anti-European guy who is full of “sour grapes” now so many non-Canadians are becoming stars in the NHL.
Folks should wake up, the things Cherry rails against that most “old school hockey folks” agree with is because of the “new Gary Bettman influenced NHL.” The rest of it is just rancid, toxic, biggoted dribble.
Most networks would take steps to curb his outrageous, biggoted talk, even from an icon.

That Crosby celebration came on the go-ahead goal near the end of a game that the Pens needed to win and still wasn’t nearly to the extent that Ovechkin’s celebrations are. (And no, I am not a Pens fan. I’d be delighted if they miss the playoffs.) Context is everything. It’s one thing to celebrate endlessly in the scenario above and it’s another thing to celebrate endlessly when you’ve scored the 6th goal in a 6-1 win against Atlanta. I know it’s hard to imagine but some people DO find Ovechkin’s celebrations to be charmless and excessive showboating.
I mean, Don Cherry is a total idiot but everyone here is totally misrepresenting what he said. He did not say someone should take a run at Ovechkin. He said he hates the endless celebrating and someone is going to take offense to it eventually. That’s a little different.

Meanwhile, you’ve got a guy who looks like a nut-case bashing a player whom he calls a “goof” just because he has passion for the sport that they both supposedly love so much.
Cherry is a moron and he needs to stop riding Crosby’s coattails.
Just admit it Cherry, Alexander Ovechkin is the best player in the game. Yes, he’s better than your little love-child Crosby.

Well, I enjoy Cherry’s schtick and don’t take it too seriously.
I’m not going to criticize him for suddenly directing his ire at a player I like.
that said, yes, he’s clearly xenophobic and most of the other things people have likely called him in this thread.
Were folks criticizing him when he talked about how the Caps were such a classy dressing team and not “thugs” like the Sens, from that one coach’s corner a few months ago?
