On Frozen Pod Episode 2 – Bon Voyage to Las Vegas Miss Virginia

On Frozen Pod comes at you again, this time in the company of a Miss America contestant, Tara Wheeler, Miss Virginia 2008, moments before she boarded her plane to Las Vegas. The pageant will air on Saturday night on TLC. Of course we don’t know if Tara will win the title. We just know no other contestant will have as good a glove hand.

Tips from AO

Thanks go out to Johnny Testa at AskMen.com, the world’s largest men’s web portal, who let us know they recently published an article entitled “Breakaway Tips From Alexander Ovechkin”. In the article, AO talkes about penalty shots, breakaways and the all-star game.

Will Our New President's First 100 Days Include Taking in a Hockey Game?

He can’t say he hasn’t been invited — our owner rolled out the red carpet, with a standing invite, and asked him to wear red as well.   Peerless cleverly points out that a Caps’ game at the Phone Booth ought to be a sporting priority among local options if seeing a palatable performance is the [...]

Must-Read Media During Our Pause in Play

We may not have hockey to watch these days, but there’s plenty of Caps-related print media to consume today, and the Washington Times again has to be credited for its coverage. Three separate Caps’ hockey files there today:

The Jeckyl and Hyde of Alexander Semin

There is a multiple personality disorder to Alexander Semin’s game, one which is appropriately lethal when directed at his opposition, and alternatively another which is insidious and a self-inflicted wound which harms his own club. We witnessed the variations in the past two games. On Long Island Monday, with the outcome against the Islanders uncertain and in overtime, we were mesmerized by the Siberian sniper’s other worldly patience with the puck, deftly feeding Alexander Ovechkin in tight for the game winner. The very next night, in a deadlocked game’s waning moments, we saw the vexing counterpart to his virtuosity: yet another boneheaded lapse in judgment, again perpetrated in the neutral zone, far away from mortal danger, outraging (again) his team’s coaching staff and leading to the Senators’ winning goal in the game’s 58th minute.

Record Ratings for Red

Having received the press release about the record setting ratings Comcast SportsNet is receiving for Capitals’ broadcasts, we were going to pass on the news to our readers. We would have run an excerpt from the release.
However, Dan Steinberg delved deeper into the numbers (thus the reason he’s the professional) bringing us interesting facts.

Follow Ovechkin on Twitter

Thanks to the Alex Ovetjkin blog for passing along the following information from InformationWeek.
Alexander Ovechkin, the National Hockey League’s third leading scorer, plans to use the social networking site Twitter to post blogs about his experience at the league’s 2009 All-Star Game in Montreal on Sunday, an NHL spokesman said.
Under the plan, Ovechkin will report directly to fans on what it’s like to play in the event and what his fellow players are up to.

Puck Passion Frozen by Lawyers

For worse or for worse, Washington is an extremely litigious town, with something like 3 out of every 2 Washington professionals possessing a law degree. Nowhere is this more evident than in the substance and tone of the Ice Skating Information Line for the C&O Canal  — (301) 767-3707. I rang it this morning, and [...]

A Call To Remember

We like any excuse to post a John Walton audio file, but in the Hershey Bears’ last game, a 3-2 victory Sunday against Worcester, Alexandre Giroux made American League history by scoring a goal in his 15th consecutive game. Who better to bring alive that moment than JW:

Bucci's Beautiful Backyard

We are all familiar with ESPN’s John Buccigras due to his hosting of the now defunct NHL2Night and his weekly columns on ESPN.com. Unless you saw Pond Hockey, you may not know he’s not only a reporter of the sport, but a participant, too — in his own backyard, noless.
His latest column and mailbag not only talks about the rebirth of the “Bucci Heritage Garden”, but gives us a few looks as well.
My backyard rink is up again here in Connecticut. The recent blast of arctic air has set us up for one of the finest stretches in Bucci Heritage Garden history. The kids have skated eight days in a row and 10 out of the past 12. Free ice, 30 feet from the back door.
