Record Ratings for Red

Having received the press release about the record setting ratings Comcast SportsNet is receiving for Capitals’ broadcasts, we were going to pass on the news to our readers.  We would have run the following excerpt from the release:

Heading into the NHL All-Star Break – the halfway point of the 2008-09 season – Comcast SportsNet and the Washington Capitals announce the network’s highest-ever ratings for the team.

Since its launch, Comcast SportsNet’s current 1.2 average rating at the season’s halfway mark sets the record. It also represents a 123% increase in viewing households compared with the first 41 games of 2007-08.

The team has reached a record household rating of 1.7 (39,1000 households) five times this season on Comcast SportsNet. Washington D.C.’s increasing interest in the team is also apparent through Comcast SportsNet’s Capitals Postgame Live ratings, which are up 200% from the same time period in 2007-08.

However, Dan Steinberg delved deeper into the numbers (thus the reason he’s the professional) bringing us such facts as:

  • The Capitals have tripled the Nationals’ TV audience.
  • The Capitals are attracting more local TV viewers than division mates Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Florida, combined.

Steinz has also taken the early lead in funniest link to OFB this year. Check out the rest of his ratings findings at the DC Sports Bog.

Not unexpected given how well the team has played for a full year. I just wish CSN wouldn’t put the Caps games on CSN alternative (Non-HD for me) whenever Caps games conflict with Wizards games.
I’d be curious how the Caps ratings compare with the Wizards ratings currently, particularly with how horrendous the Wizards have been playing lately.

Does anyone know if NHL Center Ice viewers of CSN broadcasts count in the ratings?

I would guess the ratings are done by the local Nielsen Ratings surveys, but don’t know that for a fact.
