We are all familiar with ESPN’s John Buccigross due to his hosting of the now defunct NHL2Night and his weekly columns on ESPN.com. Unless you saw Pond Hockey, you may not know he’s not only a reporter of the sport, but a participant, too — in his own backyard, no less.
His latest column and mailbag not only talks about the rebirth of the “Bucci Heritage Garden“, but gives us a few looks as well.
My backyard rink is up again here in Connecticut. The recent blast of arctic air has set us up for one of the finest stretches in Bucci Heritage Garden history. The kids have skated eight days in a row and
10 out of the past 12. Free ice, 30 feet from the back door.It is amazing how your attitude toward winter changes after you construct your backyard rink. You instantly root for cold temperatures. The cold is your ally. You are not depressed by the short, dry, cold days and nights, but rejoice in them. Without question, my life is better with my backyard rink. I’m happier, more upbeat and more attuned to nature.
I’m sure I speak for all of OFB when I say, “Bucci, we hate you” … and we mean that in the best way possible.

I know! Doesn’t he make you jealous as hell?? I love him. He not only has a passion for the sport, but the words to bring you to tears about it.
i have hated buccigross for years, mainly because i think he’s a simplistic tool whose homerism knows no bounds. but now you’re actually making me want to think about not hating him. damn you OFB for making me feel!
We’ve skated and played hockey on my neighbors pond here in winchester, VA for the last 4 days. I even had to take the day off yesterday to take advantage of the rare opportunity. It has been wonderful and I fully appreciate Buccis comments about rooting for cold weather.
Check out http://www.newenglandpondhockey.com/. In Maine, we have to root for warm weather, not cold!
It’s ok pgreene…I still hate him for just being a tool.
