I wasn’t able to follow either of the Capitals’ victories over the holiday weekend, so I perused some traditional print media coverage of the games this morning. Imagine my non-surprise, though, when I discovered that the most newsworthy-noteworthy coverage came from a blogger buddy who was in Nassau Coliseum yesterday. Pepper in the postgame put an innocent question about the Islanders’ home ice quality to Caps’ captain Chris Clark:
“I tossed a softball to the baseball fan, expecting some diplomatic
assent: ‘I know a lot of people have talked about the Verizon Center
ice. It seems like its been better this year – ‘
And Chris just cut me off with an exasperated look that suggested a profound frustration.
“No,” shaking his head. “It’s the worst. Today, [again, talking
about Nassau] it just stayed wet for a little while. You could tell
with the referees coming out and moving the water around a little bit.
But I still say Verizon, playing on it all of the time, is the worst.”
Well, who cares what actual players think of ice quality when there are ‘official evaluations’ about it (kept from public view) maintained by the league?

I played a game at the VC after the Columbus game at couple of weeks ago. The ice never froze completely, and it felt very soft. It was like skating in sand.
I was very surprised at how bright the lighting was, and how warm it was on the ice surface. Add another 17000 bodies in the room and I’m sure it gets worse.
Oops. Maybe Clarkie wants a trade? I understand that is considered a taboo topic for the Caps media types as well.
