Capital Cities Clash on Inauguration Day: Capitals / Senators Open Thread

On a day when all eyes are on the Capital of the United States, the Capitals’ eyes are focused on the Senators from the Capital of Canada.

Here is your Inauguration edition of the game day open thread.  Chat about the inauguration, parade, and the Caps/Sens game, of course.

The only time I ever have it in me to root against the Caps, arguably the most exciting team in the NHL, is when they play the Senators.
I root for a 6-5 OT thriller, with the Sens emerging victorious but the Caps still stealing an important point for their division standings… and of course, for OV to score three or four in the process.
Go Sens Go, Go Sens Go, Go Sens Go!

Thanks for the comment, Chubbs. I think your sentiments are shared across much of Canada and the US. We certainly saw that with the Toronto faithful during the 1st round of last year’s playoffs.

    @ CHUBBS…
“Isn’t it ironic” that these two towns are weirdly sports bigamists in that way? I have to admit that when the Capitals were down a few years ago, I was cheering for Alfredson & Co. It’s like a rarely seen sports alliance of sorts and we appreciate the AO support from the Great White North. Do us a favor… beat the Bruins for us!!!
So, all’s forgiven from that 4-1 series loss back in ’98, then?

So, who thinks Laich has a future in broadcasting after his playing career is over?

I think it’s definitely something that COULD happen once he retires. He’s a very strong speaker, and as my fiance likes to say, he’s also “not bad to look at.” I would be interested to hear his thoughts from the broadcast booth. While I see the potential, he’s obviously handcuffed in what sort of insight he can offer right now as a player. He definitely has the advantage already as a fan favorite though!

Why must this team suck so bad on the positive side of a 5 on 3?

First of all, it would be nice to get a 5 on 3 longer than 30 seconds for once, and second of all, we need to focus on getting the puck into the zone and setting up the offense before trying cutesy passes in the neutral zone to try and spring somebody. We’re doing their work for them by giving them easy clear after easy clear. Not smart hockey if you ask me.

@Rannells I agree, sometimes I still think our team is still EARLY in the maturation process, and then we turn around on a dime and do everything right for awhile. For us to hoist the “thingy” we have to work on not having these huge, glaring inconsistencies.

@JAY I think you’re absolutely right. Sometimes I, as do a lot of fans, forget how young this team still is. We do tend to get overexcited over the home run, when we have the capability to destroy a team with a series of singles and doubles. As soon as this team realizes it can consistently and methodically choke a team to death with it’s ability to control the tempo (fast or slow), they will be VERY dangerous.
…and stay the heck out of the box…

Yet another bad game. These guys really need to get it together if they want to go deep. They can’t only play a solid game once every four.

Until this team learns to get up for the teams they should beat, they aren’t going deep into the playoffs. God this feels like a Redskins loss.

Keep on believing, everyone. This team’s probably going through the doldrums of midseason and looking squarely in the face of a week off (except for one guy). Who amongst us has delivered 110% effort on the day before a long vacation?
Like Rannells said, we got some help from around the league and 63 points at the Break is SPOILING us ROTTEN! AND I’M LOVIN’ IT!!! : ]
