Flipping through Sunday’s edition of The Washington Post with my morning coffee, I was surprised to find an image of celebrating Toronto Maple Leaf players in what I thought was the Travel section. Such a non-Caps hockey image even in the Sports pages would be unusual; but in Travel? But there it was, in full color.
It seems guest writer Mark Stevens visited Toronto as part of the Post’s $2009 Getaway Challenge, and took in the Hockey Hall of Fame (pictured, right), a Leafs-Islanders game, and some frosty beverages to boot all for just over 500 bucks — including his flight.
Be sure to read about Mark’s visit in the Post; here’s an excerpt to whet your appetite:
Frigid beer in hand, I reflect on my pilgrimage to the Hockey Hall of Fame earlier in the day.
A glass-enclosed display of goalie masks guards the entrance. One time
I toured an aboriginal museum where a placard described the making and
significance of First Nations masks. Same here. These masks were built
to protect the wearer, to ward off evil spirits, to frighten foes.

The HHOF/Leafs game double dip is a great thing. I did it a few years ago and was fantastic (even though I was in the middle of getting the flu). I would also add having lunch in that place above the HOF should be part of the day’s activities.
Hey OC, I’m sure Stevens didn’t have as much fun as we did on our hung-over trip to the HHOF two years ago!
No doubt Thunderweenie — that trip to the HHOF (and Toronto overall) was a total blast. And touching the Cup seemed to magically cure the hangover headache that had been plaguing me to that point.
