Pretty sure that is a candidate for fight of the year…
He’s never gonna live this down… this episode will follow him for eternity. Poor Sasha.
Give the guy a break
Hey look at it this way, if that fight was in the UFC, Semin would have scored a knock-out (strikes) and would be in line for a featherweight title shot.
I look at it this way – no style points, but it was effective. I think he lost it, personally – I think he was sick and tired of being run on coming back from being injured, and if nobody was going to step up, then by God, he was.
Hell, if he stands up for himself and learns to fight, then good for him. Brash cannot be on the ice all the time. I think we need a couple of guys on D willing to drop the gloves. I’ve got no issue with Semin.
And Nylander with a roughing was awesome.
Well, at least he did not punch him in the crotch or jump Staal off a face-off like a certain Cindy did earlier today! This adds a whole new level of excitement to the next Caps/Pens game!
I was at the game and, along with most of the other folks in my section, was amused by the “fight” when watching it live, but given the rather embarrassing nature of the “fisticuffs” I was surprised that the keeper of the jumbo-tron showed a replay of this “main-event”. There are SO many times when there are no replays shown of a key or controversial play, so why replay something that shines poorly on one of our key players?
Hopefully all the appropriate edits in italics…
“What’s so special about [Semin]? I don’t see anything special there. Yes, he does skate well, has a good head, good pass, lots of goals. But there’s nothing else. Even if you compare him to Sean Avery from Dallas …[Avery] is a much more interesting fighter. The way he moves, his jabbing abilities, his thinking on the ice and his anticipation of the hook is so superb.
I think that if you take any player, even if he is “dead wood,” and start pushing his buttons, you’ll get a fighter. Especially if he scores 100 penalty minutes. No one is going to care about anyone else. No one is going to care whether he possesses great crosses. Let’s say you put someone in front of the net and let him wave a stick at the goalie, and he talks smack to the media about his hot ex-girlfriends are dating that night’s opponent; everyone will say “Wow!” and then hand him a one way ticket to therapy. That’s what they like here.
And in Russia people like beautiful fighting.
Y’know what? Semin stood up for himself. He’s no fighter, but he didn’t turtle like many non-fighters do. Compared to those who run from fights or collapse to the ice at the first sign of fisticuffs, his fight wasn’t embarrassing at all.
This is true. Semin could have just taken it and been pushed around for another 20 minutes but instead he took matters into his own hands. It wasn’t a pretty fight but if it’s going to make other players fear his bongo hands then it was worth it.
So what the heck was the game misconduct for? The explanation I’ve heard was that his fight strap wasn’t tied down and he got tosses because his jersey came off… But I’ve seen that happen in fights before with no misconduct assessed… Did the ref just feel like being a jerk tonight or something?
I have some rather entertaining pictures of the fight from up in the stands

Wow, the 2nd post in 12 hours (over 2 sites) to use a Christmas Story reference. I’ll set the over/under to 4.
I like that Alexander stood up for himself.
Doesn’t make this particular fight less funny, though.
Absolutely hysterical!
Thanks for the great Christmas Story reference video. This was hilarious.

Ummm…..HELLO???
“What’s so special about Semin?”
At first I thought ‘Egad! Is the boy out of his mind?’ What I saw was an old-fashioned thumping, such as many of us gave or endured in our school days, rather than the customary hockey-style neck-snapping jawbreaker we’ve all come to expect (and occasionally demand)of NHLers. The positives: Semin didn’t injure his hands, he turtled the pesky Staal creature, he stood up for himself, and by losing his sweater gratified thousands of ladies in the audience though it would have been hotter without the undershirt of course. The negatives: there really aren’t any. If Mr. Brashear thought the lad should receive training in the martial arts, he’d have taken him under his tutelage by now. Let Semin be Semin. He’s gone up in my estimation immensely. Also, on a side note, Crosby and the rest of his team have become irrelevant, you know, rather like the All-Star balloting. What did the kitties ever do to him? My eyes glaze over whenever I see his name.
Ok, so Semin needs a bit of work on his fighting skills. But what no one is mentioning is how Semin ends up getting Staal on the ground cowering like a little girl! The punches might have been more playground than boxing ring, but they still apparently worked.
What actually had me scratching my head more was the apparent lack of extra padding on Semin’s back. I would have figured he would have worn something extra back there, at least for a couple games.
You have to look carefully, but notice while we were laughing, Staal was covering his head. The boy turtled.
I have to admit that was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. If Semin needs a place to go to learn how to throw a punch I know of a good place. Anyway I have to agree with everyone here…he did good standing up for himself…he doesn’t need to be pretty…at least he’s not taking cheap shots. My question is why wasn’t Brash standing up for our boys? Was he trying to keep from getting hurt before Tues? All I have to say is that he better be ready for the Flyers.
Not using the tie downs on your jersey is a game misconduct. Given Semin had never fought before, it’s no surprise he wasn’t using them, but all of the tough guys do.
I hope he ties down against the Flyers, not because he’s lanning to fight, but because the Flyers WILL try to pull his jersey off deliberately in hopes of getting him ejected from the game.
If you looked really closely, I thought the dirty little so-and-so “Stall” [sic] went after Semin’s sore back and that was probably what put him on “tilt” so fast. I fear that if Sasha feels like no one’s going to drop the gloves on his behalf, he’ll eventually want out of town. I’m not suggesting we go look up McSorley’s phone number as a dedicated security squad for the guy (a la Gretz) and good for him for taking Staal on, but I agree with Space For Rent on this issue. Except Alzner. He’s got a clean ‘police record’ with the parent club (NICE!) and he’s too valuable back there to sit in the box.
OK, I don’t comment here too often, but it’s funny how two different sites talk about the fight. I’m assuming that the webmaster of Gorillamask.net is not a hockey fan:
http://gorillamask.net/
“When it comes to hockey fights you gotta go hard or go home. Alexander Semin needs to go home.”
Versus the site it links to, withleather,

“ALEXANDER SEMIN STANDS UP TO A BULLY”
I agree with the slap dis on Semin [hee hee! -Ed.], but what’s worse, a hockey player slapping a goon silly, or a goon getting slapped silly by a non-fighter?
