Kugryshev Gets Candid

Dmitri Kugryshev diving in front of the netWe already know our Russians are dynamic both on the ice and in interviews, but we may not have seen anything yet.  In his blog on IceDaily.com, Dmitry Kugryshev writes candidly about his play in the World Junior Championships, the death of Cherepanov, the callup of Varlamov, and his desire to play in the NHL.  He also responds directly to message board comments on his size and strength.

I have seen that some Capitals fans – you know who you are – have
suggested that I should stay in the gym instead of writing a blog. Are
you right? May be. But we all have a right to have our own opinions.
So, let me explain. I have been in the gym every single time when I am
not playing. I am not the “bang ‘em, kill ‘em” type of forward. I think
I am a scorer. I have said in the past that I do need better
conditioning, but I still have a right to talk. Or write. (yes, I am
talking to you, BrooklynCapsFan)…

He also made us laugh with a comment directed at OFB. You may recall our all English interview with Dmitry and more recently our mention of his new media debut. Here’s his quick note to us:

(Thanks to onfrozenblog.com for mentioning me – I owe you one! Next interview – we are doing in Russian!)

Thanks to Dan at IceDaily.com for the heads-up on today’s Kugryshev blog post.

He seems to be a very likable dude. He well could be another Karl Alzner type, the sort of young man that seems to enjoy talking about hockey as much as he does playing. Actually, guys like Kugryshev are really good for any NHL franchise because “fan-friendly” can often equal “press friendly” which in turn helps sell the tickets. Alzner, for being here less than 20 games, already has a big following. Kugryshev, when he makes the Caps team, will have a built-in following as well, because he is already cultivating fan interest. Smart – very smart indeed.
On the hockey side, GMGM has made remarks which indicate the Caps were pleased to get such a talent in the second round. He could turn out to be quite a steal !!
