I was in the house tonight, finally glad to get away from Steel Town (and Grad School) for a bit to take this game in.
A few things (and forgive me if some of this is old news…I’ve spent the last 7 weeks thinking about price discrimination, direct material/direct labor/managing overhead, AREA, replicating portfolios, and Heteroskedasticity)
-Has the novelty of the Rock the Red intro worn out? No crowd response whatsoever.
-Varlamov is sharp like a Cutco knife. Virtually mistake-free. The Caps’ future in net is secure.
-Fix the Power Play. I don’t know what it was tonight, probably a combo of trying to be too fancy one second and too careful the next.
-The refs were terrible in the third. How is the hit on Semin not a penalty? If that was Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin…I’m just sayin’.
-I saw Al Koken at Clyde’s after the game. The barkeep asked him where all the women were. Al said he had no idea.
-@ the Caps Spirit Squad or whatever they were called: I asked one of the girls to toss up a t-shirt, she didn’t oblige and tossed it to some other dude. That’s a minus-5 for the night.
-Tomas Fleischmann continues to impress. That goal was pretty.
-I would’ve loved to see Kozzy get a hattie.
-To whomever controls the music at the arena: you rule! I heard two Shinedown songs: “Fly From The Inside” during a 1st period TV timeout, and “Devour” to open the 3rd period.
It was great to be back in that place. I hope this team can keep it going.

Your title should be: AO Nets 20th, The Iron Curtain Strikes Again, and Devorski is a Jerk: Caps 4, Blues 2

Glad you could make it to the Phone Booth and excellent “knee jerks”.
Are you going to be able to make it to more games during the Grad School winter break?

I was afraid I’d get censored for using what I really thought. Also, refs were Leggo and Sutherland, not Devorski, my bad. Whoever they were … that game was horrifically badly called, and not just for the crosschecking on Semin, either. So infuriating, but we won anyway.

Spoke to a source after the game… Semin limped down the hallway to the locker room like a 90-year-old man after a hip replacement. That dirty crap really, really hurt him. I only hope that a few days’ recovery will set him right.

I thought Devorski was on that side on the far side and didn’t get to see the cross-check,.. definitely call worthy though.
As far as the check, to be honest it didn’t look as bad,…was it re-injuring a nagging injury??!!
We need Sasha for Phi and NYR.

The first non-call (tripping) in the Semin incident was correct — he was not tripped, he just lost an edge and fell.
But as Semin was getting up, Backes committed a blatant crosscheck (yes, both hands on the stick) to Semin’s lower back, after which Semin crumpled to the ice. It was brutal, and though the league should review it I’m sure they will not.

You know, this isn’t the first time Semin’s taken a brutal cross-check and it hasn’t been called — since his comments about Crosby. Apparently the ref accused him of diving and that’s why they didn’t call it – maybe it’s not deliberate, but it makes you wonder….

I was at the game, but I also watched the broadcast on replay when I got home. If you only got to see the game on TV, you’d never know how fiercely OV came to the aid of his fallen linemate. That shows me an enormous amount of leadership. There is no longer any question who is the true captain of this team.

Why do I think that if the stick had been in Dale Hunter’s hands, we would be looking at another multi-mega-game suspension. We were there last night and saw the play — Backes should be disciplined by the league.
Also remember the dirty hit that almost cost Calle Johansson the feeling in his leg. . .
Varlamov was awesome. Too quick and agile to be called an Iron Curtain. To opponents, maybe he’ll be Voldemort!

Unfortunately, I think this is it for me, Gus. The Caps are in Pittsburgh my first week back in school. I don’t know if school’s giving away tickets to sit in its benefactor’s box at Mellon Arena (they didn’t during the game in October).

I don’t know how much has changed in the years I’ve been gone, but if they’re still around, here are a couple suggestions.
CMU and Pitt at least used to have e-boards, similar to Craigslist I guess. I found many tickets on misc.market for playoffs.
So the technology has changed, but there’s probably still something similar around to look into.

The check looked dirty on TV but Semin’s reaction appeared out of proportion to me, until the camera showed the poor kid staggering to the locker room and apparently tossing his lunch at the door. An eye-witness thought there was blood on a towel carried by an on-ice official. It just shows the same event can be viewed by different people from different vantage points, and even the unvarnished camera, and everyone sees something different. No wonder the refs have a time of it, not that I’m defending the gentlemen we had last night. I can’t help feeling that if Dan Marouelli had been in charge there would have been a call. Our team’s lack of physicality could be as problematic as uneven goaltending down the stretch.

I forgot to add — could someone please come up with a better moniker than Iron Curtain? For me that raises horrific images of suffering and oppression in Hungary (yes, I’m old enough to remember that), Czechoslovakia (ask Bondra and Pivonka how they like hearing it), East Germany (Stasi informers and their victims), and all the human degradation that occured daily in the other soviet bloc nations. Why weigh this talented, cheerful kid down with such an ugly, sad name? Sorry, showing my age, but can’t help it.

Thank you so much for identifying the song they use to intro the 3rd period…I’ve been trying to find that all season–great song.
