love the pun on the name!
also, i’d like to say that after tonight’s game, i told my boyfriend that no i don’t care how absurd it is, i want a JOHNSON jersey for the holidays and no one else’s name is acceptable!!! i love watching him in that net, and i love it when his team plays with that SO talented defense it’s had all along!!!
Hey, P&B, way to wimp out on the dog eating contest!
Nylander’s still on the Caps?
Congrats also to the Phone Booth crew for the execution of dollar hot dog night. I don’t know if they’ve done this before (if they did, I missed it), but I expected long lines and/or short supplies. Neither was the case, and I think a lot of people appreciate a night where they can get a snack at the concession stand without having to take out a second mortgage on their house in order to afford it.
The hot dogs may not be for everybody, but more types of promotions like this would probably sit very well with the fans.
The best part about the Caps right now is the experience that their capable Hershey players are getting.
After playing in the NHL, they will be loaded with confidence going back to Hershey and that success will translate into additional confidence when they are recalled to the Caps. They are going to think of themselves as NHLers playing in the AHL.
Not one team in the NHL will have the kind of player depth and experience the Caps will have going into the playoffs as a result of this rash of injuries. It is a definite negative (now) that may become a distinct advantage later.
Assuming the team is healthy at playoff time… The Caps are going to have both barrels loaded and looking for big game.
@ Pete, good call: I was impressed how they kept the hot dogs well-stocked and the lines moving. Kudos, Verizon Center!
@ JP: Juuuuuust barely… and I’m glad he still was last night so I could make the Nylander-NYIslander pun.
@ Mudda: Spot-on. The team’s roster depth and the Bears’ big-league experience will not only help the Caps for future injuries, but also should go a long way toward AHL success.
A much better night last night at Verizon: better crowd, better play, better result. The Caps were a bit fragmented most of the night as I think Boudreau played around a bit with the lines but the Hershey kids did all right and seemed much more comfortable. Who’s this Aucoin kid? Love him. At first I thought he was a Caps Tunnel flag holder (kidding, but he IS small), but he’s got some verve. He skates well, hits people (and bounces off), and had a nice breakaway.
I totally agree what the roster depth is greatly improved with the experience during the injuries and with a now five-point division lead the Caps are hanging tough with depleted troops. Get everyone back on the ice by New Year’s and we could runaway with the division.
I thought Lepisto got turned around quite a lot last night and the kids are starting to struggle against teams they really shouldn’t be struggling against. BUT, before I’m killed for criticizing our boys, they ARE still earning points in the standings (and wins) so that’s all we can hope for until the Choc-itals (thanks, Jenny) are disbanded and we get our real guns back. I shudder to think what our record might look like if these injuries had not occured.
Also, Ovi left the ice for a while, any inside scoop on what’s ailing The Hero of D.C.? We’re really going to be in trouble without him…
he’s cool, he broke a skate after a hit
and lepisto is just getting started, and i’ve actually been really pleasantly surprised with his performance. same goes for all the hershey boys- lepisto, helmer, and oh man, sloan especially…i am so impressed, and i’ve gotta say, i agree with mudda: these hershey guys playing this well is only a sign that this team is going to be phenomenal for a loooooong time
I don’t think it was a skate – a skate can be fixed on the bench. He left either just before, or right at the point of the second goal, and didn’t come back until the after the 1st intermission – he missed about 10 minutes (?). I was pretty worried. From what The Cheap Seats blog is saying he’s got a bit of a shoulder injury and that also contributed to his retaliation that put him in the bin for a minor. I’m sure we’ll get no report but I’m also sure AO will play through it.
I agree about the dollar dog promo, and I also agree they the Nylander pun was clever. It caught my eye because a commenter on my fledgling blog was soliciting my thoughts on moving him outta here. If you’re feeling nice, its over at http://nationscapitalblog.blogspot.com
huh. weird- i was just going off of what the post’s capitals insider said right after he walked off last night. well i’m there with everyone else hoping that, if he is injured, he recovers quickly!
I’m a little late to the Ovie injury/bad skate mini-drama (work and all that), but I can guarantee 100% that was no bad skate that sent him off. The Islander caught Ovie from behind and to the side and basically twisted his shoulder in a funny spot. He immediately started wincing and then after the play went dead, he doubled over favoring his shoulder. After a few moments, he waved to the bench and skated directly to the bench and then went right to the dressing room. My seats look straight down the tunnel and I could see him dangling his arm in the corridor like he was trying to get the feeling back. My guess is he caught a stinger and his arm went numb on him. Thankfully, it was only temporary but a skate issue it wasn’t.
Down from Quebec and enjoyed the Isles game very much last night. Good play, and your young Bears look great on the ice for the most part. If you eliminate the horn guy and the hillbilly yelling “Let’s Geaux Cayps,” you’ll be better.
Thanks for the update. I was up in the club section right behind the Caps bench and only noticed when I didn’t see on ice or on the bench. Nice catch.
Eliminating horn guy is a deal-breaker. I’m otherwise glad you had a positive experience but we can only be so accommodating.
Yeah horn guy and the goat are pretty obligatory for the full caps experience!
What? I have never been to a home Habs game, but one CANNOT go to a Caps game without having Horn Guy and the Goat. One game earlier this year was lacking Horn Guy and we were absolutely lost – I thought we’d lose the game. Maybe it’s because we’re a government city, but we’re an organized gang, and we need a leader — that’s what Horn Guy and Goat do for us! I love them! (Now, having said this, I can do without a lot of cow bell and Slapshot with the drum….)
Hahaha. Thanks.
Unfortunately, eliminating Horn Guy is a no-go. He’s a staple.
Now, if we could just eliminate the “O” during the Star-Spangled Banner, please? I so hate that.
To me, the best Caps experience was the final game of last year’s regular season, where we managed to drown out the horn guy. (That takes doing.)
Todd, he’s the top-line center for the Bears. He leads the AHL in scoring right now and is DAMN good. He and Giroux are a joy to watch. We got him from I think Carolina.
Kitty,
Thanks…I should pay more attention to our folk down in Hershey – I just moved here a few years ago. Do they have either Aucoin or Giroux jerseys? Get ‘em early if Aucoin is this good. It must be hard to find him on the ice…and he can scoot.
Good luck to the Caps in Toronto tonight. You think my NHL pass online will let me watch? Probably not, I can only watch them when I’m not home – damn IP addresses.
