For the first time in team history, Capitals’ players have won the NHL player of the month award: today Alexander Ovechkin was named First Star of the Month for November. His award follows on the heels of teammate Alexander Semin, who won in October.
Only once before had the Caps had a player win POTM more than once in the same season — Ovechkin again, in January and March of last season. From the team’s press release today:
“Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, who led the NHL with 25 points in November, has been named the league’s First Star of the Month, the NHL announced today. Ovechkin is the second consecutive Capital to earn the league’s top monthly honor, as Alexander Semin was the First Star in October.
“Ovechkin’s 25 points in 14 games included 11 goals and a +9 rating as he recorded points in 11 of 14 games and goals in nine of 14. Before Saturday Ovechkin recorded points in 10 straight games with 22 points (11g-11a) in that time, which was the longest active streak in the league.
“Ovechkin has now won the NHL’s Player of the Month or First Star of the Month four times (Jan. 2006, Jan. 2008, March 2008 and Nov. 2008).”

I’m not necessarily a fan of the Caps, but I have a soft spot for Ovechkin. His sheer joy with every aspect of the game is contagious.
In spite of my preference for Canadian teams, I have to smile every time he scores a goal.
It’s nice seeing how excited he gets for his teammates’s successes as well as his own, isn’t it?
during the end of last season, a reporter asked Mike Green why he skated away from Ovie after scoring a goal. His response? “I didn’t wanna get knocked down; he always hug tackles us!” or something to that effect at least. totally understand what you mean, Ovechkin is a super star in so many ways
