Future hall-of-famer Sergei Fedorov has played some amazing games in his career and is still going strong. On December 26, 1996, Fedorov lit the lamp five times against his current team for a 5-4 Detroit victory over Washington.
Sure, it’s no fun watching the Caps lose . . . but if you’re home this afternoon, tune to the NHL Network at 2:00 PM for a rebroadcast of that amazing Boxing Day match-up. Sit back and revel in a glorious performance by one of the game’s best, and appreciate that Fedorov is playing for the Washington now. I, for one, never stop marveling at the fact that he’s a Capital.
h/t to pepper for the tip.

Thanks for that. Fedorov is my favorite player of all time, having followed his career since Hector was a pup. Unfortunately, I had to work while the tape was played, but I remember the game distinctly. Warmest feelings, particularly at seeing his name on our sweater. Wouldn’t it be grand if he gave us another year? And then carried on as a coach in some capacity? Yes, I am an optimist.
He likes to chirp at the opponents, usually with a menancing grin. When you see the grin, you can be sure he’s talking to them. Usually he notches a point soon after.
Glad to help FC — and thanks for your take Fedorov, terrific writing. And yes, I agree: seeing Feds play one more year, then become an assistant coach (or perhaps the Caps’ Russian scout?) would be sweet.
By the way, I ordered my red Feds sweater about a week ago; I was torn between several players but had to settle on the legend who not only carries the team whenever they seem to need it but also helped Alex Semin find the next level.
I remember that game…and how frustrated my roommate’s son (a great kid, and I wish I had stayed in touch to find out if he’s still going to games) was about Fedorov scoring from pretty much the same spot on the ice. The Kid had a good eye for hockey and my gf & I liked taking him to games better than his mother liked having the night off.
I was back in Detroit for Christmas and went to the game with my Dad, I still have the ticket stub!
