Here’s a first: the Capitals have multiple players earning designation in the NHL’s Three Stars of Week honor. Today the team learned that Nicklas Backstrom had been named First Star of the week while Alexander Ovechkin finished as runner-up.
The league began its Three Stars of the Week award with the 2006-07 season, and it wasn’t until this week that the Caps had enjoyed the placement of more than one player in it. With numbers like those two top-liners put up, how couldn’t they win? From the team’s press release:
Backstrom led the NHL with 11 points in four games including two goals, nine assists and a +10 rating. He matched a personal best of four assists in a game and set a personal record with five points Saturday night at New Jersey . He currently holds his longest career assist streak at five games (Nov. 8-15). Backstrom has 16 points on the season (two goals, 14 assists) and is tied with Alexander Semin for the team lead in assists.
Ovechkin has recorded a goal in the Capitals’ last four games, totaling 10 points (five goals, five assists) and a league-best +11 rating in that span. Teammates Ovechkin and Semin currently lead the NHL in plus/minus with a +17 rating; Backstrom is third at +11. This season Ovechkin has recorded 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists).
Nashville goaltender Dan Ellis was named the NHL’s third star performer.
