Simian Hockey Hijinks
30 November, 2008
Chimps and and monkeys are entertaining — that’s just a simple fact. So finding a hockey-savvy chimpanzee named Foxie who’s a pretty darned talented goalie is too good not to share . . . I, for one, would not challenge her to an air hockey game: Foxie lives at the Chimpanzee Santuary Northwest.
First Quarter Assessment: OFB's Take in a Southeast Blogger Party
30 November, 2008
We were asked this past week to pen a first-quarter-of-the-season summary for the Caps by the blog Illegal Curve. IC’s idea was clever — to have a blogger who’s been following each Southeast division team chime in with a state of the season to date summary. Ours began thusly: “The Capitals through the first quarter [...]
Knee-Jerks & Notes – Montreal, 11/28
29 November, 2008
After seeing the buses from Quebec parked outside the Verizon Center and hearing the slurred taunts (in French, natch) on the way in, I knew it was going to be an interesting game. I also heard it was a sellout, which definitely seemed to be the case once I got inside. Even the club level [...]
Seventy Two Hours To Savor
29 November, 2008
Bookmark November 26-28, 2008, as a defining 72 hours for the Washington hockey organization this season. Actually, go back and include the final 5:14 of Monday night’s game in Minnesota. Down 4-0 in the final game of a real rough road trip then, the Caps summoned some guile and gumption and made a game of [...]
Number 27 in Your Program
28 November, 2008
Number 27 in your program will now read D Karl Alzner. The Caps Media Relations blog has the story. “Alzner wore 27 with the Calgary Hitmen and the Canadian National Junior Team. Alzner and Mike Green both idolize Scott Niedermayer of the Anaheim Ducks, who has worn No. 27 for years. Green also wore 27 [...]
Capitals Sign and Recall Defenseman Bryan Helmer
28 November, 2008
The Washington Capitals have another healthy body to play defense tonight as they have signed and recalled a Bryan Helmer. From the press release: WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Capitals have signed defensemen Bryan Helmer and recalled him from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee [...]
Black Friday Blues
28 November, 2008
It’s Black Friday. You’ve thought about heading out to the mall looking for bargains on Christmas presents, but you don’t want to be another small fish in the sea of humanity, fighting for parking spaces, and standing in long lines. OFB has your solution. First head over to Zazzle to pick up some OFB loot: [...]
Rocking a Brand-Altering Identity: The Genesis of the Caps' 'Rock the Red' Campaign
27 November, 2008
What if instead of ‘Rock the Red’ the Capitals last spring had unveiled ‘Believe in Red,’ ‘Red Rage,’ or ‘The Rise of the Red’ as a marketing slogan? Doesn’t quite carry the same ring or flair, does it? Those branding identity alternatives were in fact variations on the red theme that the Caps’ marketing and [...]
