OnTap Magazine, “the Washington, DC, metro area’s magazine for music, entertainment, nightlife and culture,” features Alexander Ovechkin as its October cover boy. ‘Face of the Franchise’ is how Ovi is identified on the cover, and ‘Superstar Alexander Ovechkin Makes Hockey A Must See in D.C.’ follows as tagline.
There’s nothing particularly news-breaking in the brief feature, but as a cover story, intruding on Burgundy and Gold season, it’s telling of hockey’s ascent in the region. Robert Fulton’s piece does conclude with some amusing options for spending $124 million:

Isn’t it ironic that while non-hockey publications are devoting more and more space to the Capitals, this city’s premier publication, the Washington Post, is actually reducing its’ coverage of the team. Even the casual observer has to notice that recently there have been numerous days when the Post hasn’t allotted even a single line to the Caps. Thankfully, the Washington Times hasn’t followed suit and has actually increased their daily coverage. There are many reasons not to read the Post, but this one probably tops the list.

While I share your WaPost disappointment on select days this month, my understanding is that the sports editors there have approved budget/staffing for increased coverage of hockey this season. Well, that’s the buzz, anyway.
284 million Miller High Lifes? Great googley-moogley! Why didn’t they mention a halfway decent beer!?!?!?!?
Meh…
Who needs the ‘Post anymore? We’ve got OFB!
“Daaaaaaamn right…”

I hope you’re right p&b, but this article in the Globe & Mail indicates there may be less coverage in the Post rather than more: http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080930.truth30-web/GSStory/GlobeSportsHockey/home
Of course, it could be worse. In Philly, the Inquirer reassigned and eventually let go their hockey reporter because the sports editor believes hockey is ‚Äúan irrelevant sport‚Äù. How’s that for a slap in the face? Thank the Almighty that Al Gore created the internet or we’d have no hockey coverage.
Maybe we can get Palin a subscription. Cause she loves hockey
@ Victor
Yeah! Like Bud ICE!!! Now there’s a man’s beer!
Personally I think print newspapers will be dead within a decade. The big step is letting bloggers into the press and locker rooms.
