All Aboard! Capitals Sign Shaone Morrisonn

The Washington Capitals' final outstanding contract situation is resolved: Shaone Morrisonn was awarded a 1-year contract via arbitration according to the Capitals' press release. The Caps' 10 leading scorers from the 2007-08 regular season are now under contract for the upcoming season.

Morrisonn, 25, played his third full season with the Capitals in 2007-08, recording 10 points (one goal, nine assists) and 63 penalty minutes in 76 games. He had a +4 plus/minus rating, including a +14 mark in the 55 games under head coach Bruce Boudreau. Morrisonn finished fourth on the team with an average of 20:16 of ice time per game. Morrisonn played in all seven Capitals playoff games, despite suffering a broken jaw, and recorded one assist.

The contract, worth $1.975 million per Katie Carrera at Capitals Insider, shores up the Caps' top defensive pairing. With Morrisonn back patrolling the Capitals' blue line, one hopes that the chemistry between Morrisonn and Mike Green leads to even better things for the pair this season.

I posted this at Caps Insider but figured I'd post here as well.

Well, with a 23 man roster, consisting of (highest to lowest cap number) Ovechkin, Green, Nylander, Semin, Theodore, Fedorov, Poti, Clark, Kozlov, Backstrom, Laich, Morrisonn, Alzner, Brashear, Bradley, Jurcina, Johnson, Schultz, Fehr, Gordon, Flash, Steckel and Erskine

and Potheir on LTI which factors out his 2.5 million, and including Clymer's buy out

The teams Cap number is 57,656,101, which places us 956,101 OVER.

Does Alzner start in Hershey?

I'm going with Clark starting on LTIR.

or we trade Clark??? with all due respect to Clark and I do like him as a player we did fine with out him and at the end of the season last year I was quitely hoping he did not get back on the roster because the team had a geat chemistry without him on the ice. So why fix it if it aint broken??? business is business

Good stuff as per usual Sombrero! It's definitely a good discussion point. One of the D, possibly Alzner, won't be on the starting roster since the Caps' intent at this point is to carry 7 defensemen.

As for trading Clark, no way that will happen at this point. I'm hopeful he'll be back in 06-07 form -- I see him as a terrific RW for Backstrom/Semin. Remember what he did on Ovechkin's line? He could add some grit to the second line and take some pressure off Semin (plus bang in the dirty goals around the net). Or if he's still injured, then no team would trade for him until he plays for a while to show he's back in shape.

I second the idea of keeping Clark. No one's going to want a 32 year old coming off that kind of injury.

The only way the team hits a salary cap issue is if (1) Clark is healthy enough to start the season and (2) they want Alzner in the NHL because either Clark on LTIR or Alzner in Hershey clears up the cap problem.

If the team does decide those two are ready, I think (and would hope) they would trade/waive/demote Erskine and Fleischmann.

I've read some stuff about possibly trading Nylander. Has anyone else heard anything? Also I dont think Potheir will be back any time soon. They say he cant even run around with his kids

Nylander has a no movement clause in his contract. In other words, he's here in DC until he decides he wants to go elsewhere. And I don't see him wanting to leave.

I wasnt impressed with the work from Jurcina this past season, as for the D-Squad, I would think he would be on the chopping block. Erskine, i think, showed good physical play and grinding abillity (even from the blue line) and with loosing M. Cooke, We need to keep physical presence. Flash had some good moments but seems like he could get his act together. Im pretty much happy with everyone else, I just hope we get the good Theodore this season, but i also have confidence in Johnson also.

On another note I wish the best for Potheir, and wish the would release a better update on him.

I dont claim to know everything about hockey, Just some thoughts.
