I've noticed the fact that most of our hockey players seem like down to earth, decent guys. Mike Green took the time to visit with my wife and I in the Ballston mall before a practice one time. He didn't have to do that -- and he just seemed very real and decent. I have a friend with small boys and he said Ovechkin spent a couple of minutes chatting to his kids and signed stuff for them.

Thats awesome! Everytime I read something about Alzner I like him more and more. His personality and approach to the game make him seem older than his 19 years. I cant wait to see if he is on the roster at the beginning of the season.

Hockey players never cease to amaze me with how connected they are to the fans and how down to earth they are.
Thanks for sharing the picture and story with us.

It's players like this that will keep the fan base coming back year after year, regardless of how the season goes. Approachable, supportive and willing to give a bit of time to the people that matter the most - the young fans.

I think it comes from leading by example. I think all of the leaders on this team fit that bill. I also think a lot of it comes from building from the ground up and growing and becoming good together.
Of course, some of it was probably just luck that we got the personalities that we did.

Kim, I think you're on to something with this team. I think one reason Washington responded as it did last spring to Bruce's boys was a basic likability about them. I'm not sure you can draft for it, but once you have it, you have to guard it, which is why I think we've seen GMGM be as aggressive in re-upping as he has this summer.

I saw a quote once that went something like: Sports do not build character they reveal it.
Lucky for us, we have a team that has an abundance of character to go with their amazing talent.
As a mom whose son and daughter have also been on the receiving end of smiles and pucks from players they adore, I can't even begin to tell you how much that picture made me smile.
