"I know for sure [Fedorov] wants to stay [in Washington]"

At a ceremony in Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. today, Alex Ovechkin will officially be awarded the Art Ross Trophy and the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy. Prior to the award ceremony, Alex met with the press on a conference call.
Alex said he was happy to win these awards and feels it is important to the fans to know that their “players win something and have good players.” He also said that the recently completed World Championship was “unbelievable,” especially beating Canada in Canada.
I asked Alex if Alexander Semin’s play in the postseason and again at the Worlds shows that he’s maturing into a world-class talent and if they would be battling for these same awards next year. He responded that watching Semin for the last three years that “you’re right, he’s going to be a great player and I’ll happy if he wins awards next year.”
With the talk turning to the Worlds he was asked if he had spoken with Sergei Fedorov in trying to convince him to return to Washington to play next year. Without hesitation, Ovechkin responded, “I know for sure he wants to stay. I know for sure.”

Now the questions are, how much money does he want and for how many years?

When asked if Feds would take less money, AO responded that “it’s not my job to talk about money and how many years he wants to be there”.

Now that I look at it, can the Caps even offer that money? Assuming Green signs for 3.5 and Huet for 5….we’re seriously up against the cap. And is it a good idea to try and lock Backstrom into a Mike Richards type deal (12 years/$69 mil)?

  5. Two points in favor of giving Feds a one- or two-year deal:
    1) Until I see Nylander play with his customary skill — fully recovered from his surgery — I wouldn’t trust his return as a top-two-line center.
    2) Even if Nylander’s back and 100%, when’s the last time a top-notch team had TOO MANY quality centers? Backstrom, Nylander, Fedorov… that could very well be the best centerman depth in Capitals history.

How nice is it that players actually want to play here now? I’ve been filled with strange feelings this past season…pride, not just waiting for us to blow a lead, knowing we could come back in any game…this team is just fun to be a fan of now and this summer is going to be way too LONG!!

    OC,
Not only would Backstrom, Feds & Nylander be the best center corp in Caps history, when you add in Gordon/Steckel it could be the best group of centermen in the league.

Fedorov can also play on the wing, quarterback the power play (imagine 2 potent pp units), and he can even play defense. I don’t see why this is a Feds vs. Nyls thing. I want them both on my team.

Can GMGM find a way to sign Green, Feds, Laich and Huet? It would certainly be nice but you have to wonder……

Feds can play as a 4th forward (in place of a defenseman) on the PP.
It wasn’t long ago that players requested no-trade-clauses to avoid trades to Washington. It’s nice to see that players actually want to come and play here since Boudreau took over. It makes sense since Washington now has one of the more “wide open” offenses in the NHL where players can really show off their skill, with a coach that actually trusts players.
