Alzner Signed — Next Stop?

The Washington Capitals have announced the signing of defeceman Karl Alzer to a 3 year entry-level contract. As with all signings, the terms of the deal were not made public.
The fifth overall pick in the 2007 Entry Draft, Alzer will most likely start next season in Hershey, though it is possible he may make the Capitals with a strong training camp. He will participate in the team’s summer development camp July 7-12 at Kettler.
From the Capitals press release:

A two-time gold medalist at the IIHF World Junior Championship with Canada, Alzner captained the Canadian team in 2007-08 and was named one of the team’s top three players by the coaching staff. Alzner also represented Canada in the 2007 Canada/Russia Super Series and played for the WHL team in the 2006 Canada-Russia Challenge.
Alzner is rated as Washington’s top prospect by The Hockey News and Hockey’s Future. Those publications rank him as the NHL’s No. 9 and No. 12 prospect, respectively.

While I’d like to think the Caps are so deep they don’t need to rush Alzner to the big club, the reality is that I think the Caps have already penciled him into the lineup. If he starts the season in Hershey, it’s probably not a good thing.

Exactly, b.orr. He doesn’t have to blow people away in training camp. He only starts in Hershey if he struggles mightily. Not happening.

If it’s free agent signing – let it be Green
If it’s prospect signing – let it be Osala

Well, if he starts in Hershey, he’s either struggling or the Caps defensive corps is fantastic.

Correction JKL. I think a defeceman plays on the defecation corps. Could be a tough season.

If there are no changes this summer to the D core this off season I still think its likely he’ll be in Hershey to start. There is going to be more expectations/pressure on the Capitals next year so don’t think its the time to let a young Dman learn on the fly. Give him a year down at Hershey for is intro to pro hockey. This will not hurt is dev.

  7. usiel,
Your view here is 1000 percent rational and time-tested. But on well-valued and not so idle scuttlebutt I have it that had the Capitals defeated the Flyers in game 7 Mr. Alzner, whose Hitmen were recently dispatched from the WHL postseason, would have been shipped to Washington (instead of Hershey) and dressed for round 2. Obviously, that’s quite an endorsement. It may also on some level speak to the severity of the Schultz and ShoMo injuries.
